But not on all issues.

And yes, i noticed how selfish and self-centered some DUers are when they expressed their anger at people who cut in on the freeway. A person who was not selfish and self-centered would probably give a driver who finds himself in the wrong lane on a crowded freeway a little slack and let him merge into traffic.

And my comment is not off topic.
I'm just agreeing with your comment about how "[m]ost Americans are way more self-centered than they would admit." Includes some Americans on DU.

There is no way you travel the roads of NYC. Try it sometime, your view may change.

By the way, I support the President on a majority of the issues as well. It's just that your analogy is backwards when it comes to arrogant NY drivers, especially those in expensive luxury vehicles.

than I would have thought possible in the situation. I also blame myself for not giving him, or any other President, the level playing field and tools our Democracy requires. He is doing a great job playing the hand the American people have dealt him. If I get frustrated or doubt, I think of the other option, a Republican President and all that entails.

I support him generally, and definitely when he's doing good things. When he is pushing the TPP or justifying spying on everybody, then no way. To support him unconditionally would be to elevate him to the status of a deity, where one would simply "have faith" in him. This is not a quality to foster in a democracy.

Fri Feb 21, 2014, 12:50 AM
Feb 2014

You left that wide open for interpretation. This leaves anyone to fill in the blanks - in fact, for those who answered unequivocally "yes," one could argue that they've signed onto a lot more than perhaps they intended. From your posts, you appear to support Obama a lot, so it's reasonable to make the assumption that when you ask whether someone "supports Obama," you mean for support to be closer to unconditional than what I would agree to.

My feeling is this: no one deserves unconditional support. It's too close to faith, and faith has been used to keep people in line for thousands of years, when they really should get out of line and object to stuff. The same goes for Obama. This whole TPP thing is seriously messed up, and nobody should put themselves in the position of being required to "support Obama" when what he's doing is against their self-interests, or against the interests of the whole country (or 99% of it). In a democracy where, in theory, we are self-governing, it's imperative that people don't give their unconditional support to anyone or any group. To do so is to abandon your responsibility as a citizen to make decisions that are right for you or the nation.

Unfortunately, too many people do exactly that.

Ask the respondents, I know many of them well. Ask them how they feel.

Many of us support this President, though we do have a hair on fire contingent that runs around saying yikes he's caving@!#$%^&* Syria/Russia, SS, Obamacare, Iran etc etc etc.

As for unconditional support, that is your statement not mine. I believe in the man. I believe that he will do the best that he can for this country. He is no god or diety that can make things happen at will. There are laws to follow and lawmakers that do not want to see that happen!

As I said you are free to have your opinion.

Fri Feb 21, 2014, 01:25 AM
Feb 2014

"As for unconditional support, that is your statement not mine," followed by, "I believe in the man." These are contradictory, at least without more information. The original question of this post, "Do you support Obama," could mean anything since it lacks any details or context. When Bust et. al. used the phrase, "Support the troops," it was intended to quash dissenting views of people who were against the Iraq war as somehow being against the troops and unpatriotic. When I see something like, "Do you support Obama," it makes me uneasy in that, at best, it's cheerleading like "go Broncos" or some meaningless crap, or at worst, it's intended to coerce people to go along with whatever a person wants to do, without thinking through the consequences or implications.

No more American allegiance in the Business Community as we are all Internationalists now.

No more appealing to compromise when independent thinkers are being weeded out of the GOP.

No more fact based discussions until the media steps up its game.

No more America if Conservatives want to rewrite history and appeal to the ignorant.

The Republican Party has abandoned all reason and is nothing more than a propaganda outlet for the most powerful in the world. Until Fox News viewers are made aware of the fact that they are being screwed by those they listen to daily, we will defeat our own society. The end of America - brought to us by Roger Ailes and Co.

In the meantime, I support President Obama and can only appreciate what he has had to deal with, like no other president before him.

Theres not alot of hate. Some, mostly piddling, but not alot.

There's alot of criticism. There's alot of disappointment. There's alot of shock. There's alot of confusion.

And no, I don't support the force feeding of Gitmo prisoners. I don't support the tripling of troops in Afghanistan, or the execution of the SOFA in Iraq. I don't support the Chained CPI that is "still on the table". I don't support the mandate in the absence of the public option. I don't support the honoring of Rick Warren. I don't support much at all about the TPP in many of the different forms I have seen. I could go on but you get the point I hope.

He claimed that "a few years ago he'd be considered a moderate republican". He's basically Colin Powell. No, not my favorite president, but I'll take him over Romeny any day.

I strongly oppose many of Obama's other policies such as his use of drone violence, his expansion of military intervention in Africa, his policies regarding whistle blowers, his expansion of the national security state, his policy of executing U.S. citizens without due process, and his embrace of the Trans Pacific Partnership.

This severe weather has kept me indoors even more than usual in winter, and I've had time to peruse more of DU than I would've otherwise.

I'll be supporting President Obama even this Spring and early Summer when I can't be online as much. I've asked management to give us a 'follow' function to facilitate tracking the best writers, but the concern seems to be that newbies would be at a disadvantage. I pointed out the discrepancy they face in the valentine department as well. Still think we should be able to 'follow' whom we wish. Maybe if enough people lobbied for it....

Anyway, I'll suggest one way people can gauge the true level of their support for President Obama: try showing up in RedNeckLand wearing campaign gear and deal with the flack you'll get. If you really want to test yourself, go alone. (I used to celebrate Veterans Day by wearing my Harry Bridges (ILWU) union tee shirt into a VFW hall and see how long I could stay before they kicked me out. Doesn't work in the MidWest, though, because even the older guys don't seem to have heard of the ILWU, although I guarantee you they hate unions with a passion. But I digress....

Not to make light of this but somone posted a thread today -

Wedding turns Into A Funeral - something like that for a subject line.

I think that's true for a lot women around the world. Here I am, minding my own business, living my life, traveling, "cooking" myself a simple bowl of Cheerios for dinner, walking around naked if I feel like it in my own home, and most important - sleeping diagonal on the bed. And then BAAAAAAAM! He catches you in the cross hairs and the death of you as an individual occurs.

Between a mini vid of three black men throwing their head back in laughter and then seeing that subject line on a thread first thing this morning - my stomache hurts from laughing so hard.

I don't ever want to laugh about a thread title in regards to such a morbid and terrible subject again.

So I thank you for not reposting that - it's sick and can be taken as a joke if one is not careful. The way you said it was appropo.

I don't see a lot of difference between GW Bush and BH Obama. Same policies, politics, -different Business Party. The ACA is from the Heritage Foundation, same drone strikes (but escalated), same NSA wiretap program, same TARP program, same GM bailout (both started by GW Bush), same "state secrets" whistle blower prosecutions, same deport illegal immigrants, same - NO Wall Street prosecutions, same -NO support for Occupy Wall Street, same proposed cuts to Social Security, same TPP. The TPP and SS cuts (chained CPI) were the tipping point for me. We seem to have a choice between a moderate republican and crazy people. Where is the populist that ran for office? I know he's only human but -He could motivate millions if he would just fight for us, and not pay us lip service.

Thu Feb 20, 2014, 10:58 PM
Feb 2014

yet if you believe that Obama and GWB are one in the same , then you are sadly misinformed.

Here is one link. You can use google for information on the rest of your concerns.

On Monday, the federal government announced it had sold off the remaining shares from its $49.5 billion bailout of General Motors in 2009. But the $10.5 billion loss on paper obscures the massive total return on investment for the U.S. economy overall and American taxpayers in particular. As a new analysis from the Center for Automotive Research found, had GM and Chrysler failed altogether, the result could have been 4.1 million jobs lost across the U.S. economy in 2009 and 2010, with federal transfer payments and $105 billion in lost income and payroll tax revenue for the U.S. Treasury.

In its report, CAR examined two scenarios that showed Uncle Sam reaped a return on investment ranging between 334 to 768 percent. In the worst case, the failure of the Bush and Obama administrations to rescue GM and Chrysler led to complete collapse of the American auto industry and the death of its supplier network. In the "GM only" case, CAR's only assumption was that other automakers could not replace GM capacity and employment until 2011. As the full report explained, the payoff to American taxpayers for the $13.7 billion lost in the sale of shares of companies has been immense:

Our results show the U.S. government saved or avoided the loss of $105.3 billion in transfer payments and the loss of personal and social insurance tax collections--or 768 percent of the net investment. Additionally, 2.6 million jobs were saved in the U.S. economy in 2009 alone and $284.4 billion in personal income saved over 2009-2010.
Even more impressive are the results of the GM scenario which did not even require the assumption of shutting down the supplier sector or other automaker employment. The only assumption was that other automakers could not replace GM capacity and employment until 2011. In this case, the U.S. government avoided the loss of $39.4 billion in increased transfer payments and lost taxes in just two years: 2009-2010. This is 334 percent of the projected $11.8 billion of Treasury funds not recovered on the public's investment in GM. We should add once again that in this scenario, the U.S. economy avoided the loss of 1.2 million jobs in 2009 and the loss of $129.2 billion in personal income in 2009-2010.

The Center's assessment may actually understate the impact of deciding to "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." (That is, the future Mitt Romney proposed not for the city but for the American auto industry.) Had President Obama refused to provide a lifeline to the GM and Chrysler in early 2009, the broader U.S. economy may have experienced an "Industrial Lehman Brothers Effect" that could have devastated the American manufacturing sector for decades to come. Older centers of the industry in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois would have been gutted. Just as important:
snip

But thanks to the Bush and Obama administrations, the Upper Midwest did not enter an economic death spiral leading to a permanent depression.
The $10.5 billion the Treasury ultimately lost on its GM shares, along with the $1.9 billion not recouped from Chrysler may well be the best investment Uncle Sam ever made.

You remind me of my republican brother-in-law, I argue with. If you took all of Obama's policies and put them in an old white guy -republicans wouldn't hate him. I have reluctantly concluded that the hatred of Obama is driven by pure racism. I can find no other meaningful explanation. Because the majority of his policies and positions mirror GW Bush - or copy the republicans original ideas -like the ACA (as outlined earlier).
As a person who works in science field I really try and let the data/evidence guide my conclusions. I try and be open to what the data are saying. Then I must reluctantly accept it's answer, no matter how much it upsets me.

Chillax Sheepshank,
I'm just saying my republican brother-in-law hates President Obama with a passion. I ask why? I expect a reasoned and measured response as to the details. I can't get any. I point out the B Obama's policies and GW Bush's policies (and positions) are very similar or the same. It's ok to hate/dislike someone's positions - but you have to be able to articulate why. Some democrats seem to want to love Obama and disregard his positions, just as some republicans want to hate Obama and disregard his positions. Let the evidence guide you, not some silly hope, dream or belief. President Obama's a very smart guy, but I think we've been punked (and it makes me sad).

And I believe history will smile upon him tommarrow.

I support President Obama because he is a good man. He is competant, accomplished and pragmatic. He is a dedicated family man, and an inspirational leader.

His realistic supporters understand there was a tremendous amount of projection onto this president, irrational hatred from the far right and unrealistic expectations from the far left and some in between.

I worked to give President Obama the votes he needed in Congress. Not enough of us did. He was elected President, not crowned King.

He inherited the 2nd greatest economic freefall in US history. His policies, entirely without support and with unprecedented obstructionalism from the radical right in Congress, produced the quickest return to positive job growth in 25 years. His policies saved the auto industry. He has oversaw the greatest turn-a-round in job creation in US history. President Obama has overrsaw the greatest turn-a-round in the DOW in US history. He has reduced the yearly deficit more than every other president combined. He has presided over the most scandal free administration in US history. By next year he will have ended both of the wars he inherited. President Obama passed the first step to universal health care, a goal talked about for 100 years.

He is not short of accomplishment, but many of his critics are short of perspective and balance.

When I was young, Republican ideas seemed to make more sense.

One day over beer, a friend made the claim that European countries had better health care than the US did, and at a lower cost. I set out to do research to prove him wrong, but found out that he was right.

"Hmmm... so free-market economics isn't always best... what else am I wrong about?"

I did some research and found out that most of what I'd casually believed was wrong. The evidence was clear: Liberal policies simply works better, far better, than any other way. That's true whether we look at America's history, or we compare countries today.

As to Bush vs. Obama... the record speaks for itself.

and I think he's our best hope right now.

But, from an aging liberal, before I die, I want to see one more "far left," take no prisoners liberal take the country by storm and blow away America's raging right wing, free market, religious fundamentalists with the truth and a real quest and passion for "liberty and justice for ALL." I know, dream on...

The election and re election of President Obama, while he's not the uncompromising liberal I long for, is such a huge step forward, that I'm grateful to have lived long enough to see it, and commend him for the many things accomplished, especially in the face of outrageous and unrelenting opposition. He's blazing the trail and our first family has shown America more class and grace than we deserve.

while I disagree with some choices and tactics, this is a Republic as well as a Democracy.

I think his moral compass is intact and it guides him as he mentions in the OP's quote.

President Obama is leading the way to the new, enlightened age for the US. The Tea Party is already dying out. Bye-bye, Repugs!

It is cliche' but I try not support the politician, rather focus on policies.

Several I disagree with, but on the whole, yes, I agree with the president.

While I may not agree with him 100%, I think he truly means to do this country some good. In the end, I find that to be my biggest requirement.

If there hadn't been an unbelievably well financed and coordinated effort to make him fail and to stymie hs every appointment and initiative. I believe he came in truly intending to be a benevolent president, and was completely blindsided upon finding to what extent evil people would go just to make things bad for the country as long as they could make things bad for him. I also believe he has done an unbelievable job under those circumstances, unparalleled in modern presidential history. You'd have to go back to Truman to find a Congress so hostile, and maybe even then you wouldn't find one.

As for me, personally, well, we're both in this pic. You figure it out.

He's doing the best he can while the GOP shoots him every chance they possibly can get. Considering the GOP's plan was to make this presidency the worse ever, Obama is doing a damn fine job under these conditions.

232. I Support My President....

I learned a long time ago working on various campaigns that I never agreed 100% with any politician, even those I considered as liberal, never agreed with me on everything. It is with much surprise that I see so many people on this board who are willing to throw this man under the bus because he dares to think differently from them.

He is not a disappointment... he is the man we hired to do this job. We hired him because of his intellect, his demeanor, and that moral compass he talks about. We didn't hire him to agree with us on everything. While I wanted to see him kick sand in the faces of these Republican nitwits, he tried to do the right thing... compromise. In my opinion, he tried too hard for too long, but he wouldn't have been the man we elected if he hadn't tried.

For all of those who are 'so very disappointed' in Barack Obama, I only want an honest answer to this question.

Would you rather have John McCain or Mitt Romney in the Oval Office?

Just imagine where this country would be at the moment...without Barack Obama.

Yes... I support my president.
