Speaker John Boehner is so against raising the minimum wage that he once said he would rather commit suicide than vote for a clean increase.
The Ohio Republican and son of a barkeep has repeatedly opposed federally mandated hike increases, which have been a constant in the Democrats election-year playbook.
Boehner has always believed that it's a job killer, former Ohio Rep. Steve LaTourette, a labor-friendly Republican who is close to Boehner, told The Hill. He pointed to the Congressional Budget Offices recent report that found that increasing the minimum wage could cost the economy 500,000 jobs.
Some Democrats are optimistic Boehner will cave and allow a vote this year, but the record shows there is little if any daylight between the pro-business Speaker and his conservative conference on this issue.

(262 posts)Informed Ohio voters in his district will NOT be pleased when they are told or educated that he spends very little time in Congress - less of total of 6 months in a year. And the time he is on Congress, it's not for them either.
It's time for a bona-fide Democrat to challenge for Boehner's seat.

(27,315 posts)They are getting a quote that is nearly TWENTY years long rather than talking about the issue. It is irrelevant as he could have changed his mind.
They never answer the question about what he believes NOW.
The point is that Boehner is against the existence of the minimum wage, so short of a (n unlikely) wave of support within his caucus, there is ZERO chance he will bring a bill to the floor.
There is also ZERO chance a discharge petition will work, because those who would support it are also those who support Boehner as speaker.

(39,961 posts)Is that a Republican that votes to do away with the minimum wage so that people labor themselves into poverty, or is there something I'm missing here?
