Why have separate locker rooms? We are all human and our bodies are all beautiful.

(36,827 posts)The first time I saw a unisex bathroom was in the military at Thule AB, Greenland in the visiting officer's quarters. It was designed and built by Danish contractors. The bathroom had separate shower and toilet stalls with privacy doors. The common area had sinks and mirrors. The same concept exists throughout Europe. It's not that big of a deal.

As for unisex bathrooms... I know all about them having traveled extensively.

(52,161 posts)I would think having the individual type restrooms with keys that many offices and other workplaces have would actually be a better idea. It would cut down on bullying and also end the problem that trans students currently have regarding getting to use the restroom they should be permitted to use.

i think maybe putting one in each classroom might help though.
A new middle school is going up near me. Planned with a restroom in every classroom and several singles near cafeteria.

(108,978 posts)except for the mess boys made. (Sometimes their aiming was off.) I didn't miss that when I "graduated" to girls' rooms.
But I don't know about a key. With elementary age kids, time if often of the essence!

(52,161 posts)then I wouldn't see the need for a key either. I meant ones that the greater public would have access to.

Might happen someday.

(23,340 posts)and the youth hostel in Amsterdam I stayed in 40 years ago had the boys and girls using the same showers, because of plumbing issues on the girls side of things. To them it was no big deal.
I also, like Major Nikon, encountered unisex bathrooms over there. It was a unique experience, using the urinal in the bar bathroom, and have a female acquaintance wave to me on the way to a stall.

There's already enough problem with sexual harassment, even in elementary schools (and sometimes girl on boy). This would invite more.
