1. Don't think they can do that. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been trying for years to split off

into a separate state because most of the money sent to Lansing doesn't make it back north past Midland. They'd like to create a separate state and retain their tax monies.

2. This is attempt number ten in the state of california to split it, since it became a state

the first attempt, in the late 1850s, was the only one that got close. Then there was this thing called the civil war that intervened. Suffice it to say, that one, given communications technology of the time, actually made sense.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]It's not going to happen, so relax. If anyone you know starts promoting the idea, just laugh at them. They're idiots.

6. Never going to happen

Congress will never approve it as required by Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution.

“New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

“The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to Prejudice any Claims of the United States, or of any particular State.”

The last time it happened was 1863 when West Virgina was created from Virgina.

just splitting into a northern and southern, a la the Dakotas. The idea bobbles around for a year or two and dies from lack of entertainment value.

9. I disagree that it can't happen. All previous attempts didn't have Citizens United on their side.

Between Citizens United enabling millions if not billions being poured into the debate, there may be a Republican congress. The idea that California could pick up 10 extra Senators would be compelling if it could change the power in the Senate. The way the billionaire has cut the state up it would favor the Republicans.

Also Silicon Valley would save billions in taxes. That's a pretty good motivator to get other Silicon Valley money to join the fight. Think what was accomplished with the same-sex marriage law.....
