USPS eyes Charlton Heston for postage stamp

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/controversial-charlton-heston-usps-stamp-682477

The U.S. Postal Service said that despite reports to the contrary, a postage stamp featuring an image of actor and NRA activist Charlton Heston has not been approved yet, nor have others with images of pop icons, such as rockers Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, or NBA great Wilt Chamberlain.

Those names and more, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and slain gay activist and politician Harvey Milk, were leaked via "confidential document" to the Washington Post, according to Roy Betts, a spokesman for the Postal Service.

The document was not meant for publication, nor have final decisions been made, Betts said. While the document contained recommendations from the 15 members of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, its selections are not final until other steps are taken, including legal reviews and consumer input.

Fans have been lobbying for a Heston stamp ever since his former publicist, Michael Levine, gathered supporters at the actor's star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood to announce an organized campaign.

I don't like his politics and don't think he was a great actor but he was famous and famous people often get stamps. I don't think it is a big deal. Now I must say I really want the Milk stamp.

he had a few huge, blockbuster films and also a bunch of wierd movies.

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to see The Planet of the Apes when I was a young kid. This was about the same time as the Apollo 8 mission, the first time we orbited the moon without landing. Of course I could not yet read so I always thought it was Apollo Ape.

It seems amazing that we put men on the moon first in 1969 and last in 1972 and we have not yet had anyone go out of a low earth orbit since that time. What also is amazing is the the engineers who designed the space shuttle never thought their design would be around for 40 years. They assumed that NASA would continue to advance like it did in the 60s and 70s.

(his first film, a black and white version of "peer gynt", was one of the worst I have ever seen)

. . . .

In a 1997 Fighting the Culture War in America speech, Heston rhetorically deplored a culture war he said was being conducted by a generation of media people, educators, entertainers, and politicians against:

"...the God fearing, law-abiding, Caucasian, middle-class Protestant – or even worse, evangelical Christian, Midwestern or Southern – or even worse, rural, apparently straight – or even worse, admitted heterosexuals, gun-owning – or even worse, NRA-card-carrying, average working stiff – or even worse, male working stiff – because, not only don’t you count, you are a down-right obstacle to social progress. Your voice deserves a lower decibel level, your opinion is less enlightened, your media access is insignificant, and frankly, mister, you need to wake up, wise up, and learn a little something from your new-America and until you do, would you mind shutting up?"[54]

He went on to say:

"The Constitution was handed down to guide us by a bunch of wise old dead white guys who invented our country! Now some flinch when I say that. Why! It's true-they were white guys! So were most of the guys that died in Lincoln's name opposing slavery in the 1860s. So why should I be ashamed of white guys? Why is "Hispanic Pride" or "Black Pride" a good thing, while "White Pride" conjures shaven heads and white hoods? Why was the Million Man March on Washington celebrated by many as progress, while the Promise Keepers March on Washington was greeted with suspicion and ridicule? I’ll tell you why: Cultural warfare!"
. . .

I went to the PO just after Christmas to get stamps, they asked my what I want for stamps and I said I don't care so he gave me a book of Hanukah Stamps, so that is what get slapped on the bills every month till they are gone, then I will go back and they will give me some other random book of stamp.

I am just glad most stamps are the sticker type now, licking the stamps was nasty.
