According the AMA Journal and the drug project 17000 people per year die from all illegal drug use

In 2010, 31328 people died from guns. Crystal meth almost certainly caused far fewer deaths than guns. Yet, I can't buy, without a photo ID issued by the state, sudafed. I can not buy more than a certain number of boxes at one time nor more than a certain number of such boxes a month regardless of my presenting an ID or not. Yet I can buy as many guns as I can afford without any ID at all if I do so at a gun show. We hear all the time well many of those gun deaths are suicides so we shouldn't have to alter our behavior due to them. Well, why should I have to be inconvenienced by these laws in regard to Sudafed simply because some drug addled people will die from crystal meth? I'll tell you why. Because human life should be more important than avoiding inconvenience. Yes, it is inconvenient for a gun buyer to have to show ID, get a backround check, and get a permit. Boo Hoo.

This source says you are off by a factor of 2 or more:

http://www.ama-assn.org/ams/pub/amawire/2013-february-27/2013-february-27-physician.shtml

It says 38,000 people died of an overdose in 2010. Is there a parsing of words with the word 'illegal'? ...because so many of the deaths are from prescription drugs? Still the vast majority of people who die from prescription drug overdoses are using them illegally - as in without a prescription.

Personally I don't care one bit if there is a background check at a gun show. I think you will find that an extraordinarily small number of gun deaths are associated with gun show transactions...but whatever, I don't care, require background checks.

But at least use real numbers when making your case, ok?
