I was out driving this past weekend and the amount of potholes I saw in the roads is a disgrace.Has anyone else in there state seen an increase of potholes on there roads.Someone said it's the salt they are laying on the roads before it snows that's causing the potholes. That's why this country needs serious infrastructure. I was stationed in Germany back in 1991 and there roads back then were better than our roads now. Some in that country coming over here to drive would be horrified trying to drive

(36,063 posts)The construction sites are by themselves huge messes, but the alternate routes around the construction are being crushed by the increase in traffic. No patch has a chance to hold up in this weather.

(6,399 posts)The deeper freezes we're getting are causing a lot more fractures in the road which turns into some really bad frost heaves along the way. Which during the brief thaws, plowing and other wear and tear is just ripping it all up.

(22,871 posts)Even our freeways.Although this is nothing new for Michigan, honestly we don't need a "welcome to Ohio" sign at our border, the road conditions are a giveaway that you've left Michigan and entered Ohio's much better roads. I don't understand why there is such an obvious difference between these two states as far as road conditions go,but there is.

i was on a road that carries grain trucks from northwestern il to the illinois river. it was 10 years or so away from crumbling into cement dust.

(23,975 posts)...are practically third world they are so bad. We live in one of the far northwest suburbs of the greater Chicago area actually closer to the WI state line than the city). Are friend of ours has one of those tiny smart cars, and one of the holes in the road in front of his house is bigger than his car.
My husband compared playing "Dodge the Potholes" to doing giant slalom.

(32,080 posts)We don't get the snow, or the freeze-thaw cycles y'all get in the Northeast and Midwest. But, we do have the lowest gas tax in the country. Consequently, we also have some of the worst roads, thanks to little maintenance and cheap materials. My city has been patching up the potholes, but another forms right next to them a month later. There is one "T" intersection in my neighborhood that looks like the moon due to all the craters in it.

(37,364 posts)have speedbumps created by frost heave from the intense and severe cold. The road bed is pushed up by the frozen ground and the the plows hit the bump and create areas of broken pavement.
