Duke Freshman Working Her Way Through College as a Porn Star

A Duke University freshman who was outed as an adult film star by a fellow classmate has spoken out, defending her choice to star in X-rated videos so she could put her way through school.

The young woman — who calls herself "Lauren" — said that starring in adult films is a way for her to foot the $60,000-a-year tuition at the Top Ten school in Durham, North Carolina.

"I worked as a waitress as a job for a year in high school," she told Duke's student newspaper, The Chronicle. "Not only did it interfere with my school where I was barely sleeping and wasn't doing my work, but I also was making $400 a month after taxes."

The experience, Lauren said, was humiliating. "I felt like I was being degraded and treated like s***," she said, saying that in her mind, a blue-collar job is much more demeaning than staring in a raunchy adult film.

Not surprising it's more lucrative, but I wonder at the ultimate psychological toll. For some, it's probably not an issue. For others, however, I could see how work in blue movies might be exceptionally degrading. But then, I can see that happening from all kinds of labor. There are, it seems, an infinite number of ways we can be screwed by corporate America (whether the corporation makes sheets or uses them) . . .

Duke is always in the top ten and the others in the top ten -- Penn, Columbia, Stanford, Princeton, etc are all around that much -- tuition plus room and board and various student costs.

With limited opportunities (retail? unpaid internship?) as college students, young people will do anything and everything to survive independently and avoid the shame of living at home. Vices like drug dealing and porn out of desperation. Reminds me of Lorde's song "Royals". Just my short & sweet response, no time for an extended rant. Peace.

article; most of them are saying meh to her line of work and that the real crime is the horrendous tuition of 60k a year. And they're right. If she's doing it voluntarily and she doesn't have a problem with it, then who else has the right to weigh in with judgment?

Didn't the "struggling man/woman works in sex industry to pay for college/med school/law school or earn capital to start own business" -story become cliché like 15 years ago??

Hell, almost ten years ago I had a friend of a friend moonlighting as a dominatrix to pay for law school, and she was probably earning ten times as much as these low-rent porn producers pay for amateur talent...
