Study calls Anchorage schools America's most diverse high schools

To dispel a common misconception that Alaska is "white bread." While other places may have large ethnic populations, Anchorage is a true melting pot, one of the things I really love about this place.
According to latest statistics, 93 different languages are spoken in the homes of ASD students. Really nice video at the link.

ANCHORAGE -

Saying hello takes on new meaning at East High School these days. It has a lot to do with diversity in this building being a part of everyday life.

While the school’s 2,200 students represent a variety of ethnic backgrounds, University of Anchorage Alaska sociology professor Dr. Chad Farrell discovered after a phone call from a parent that East along with Bartlett and West high schools can take the honor of being the most diverse schools in the U.S.

A conservative calculation, Farrell said, gathered from data on 18,000 high school students revealed ethnicities ranging from White to Black, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian-Alaska Native, Hawaiian-Pacific Islander, and Bi-Racial.

"A hundred would be maximum diversity and that would be where all seven groups are equal size," Farrell said. "Within these broad ethno-racial groupings there is a tremendous amount of diversity, linguistic diversity, cultural diversity, geographic diversity."

That's why I posted it. I'm all about busting stereotypes. Anchorage School District is a minority majority district.

The Noodle House on Spenard- Some of the best Korean noodles ever! Thai Kitchen- The Pad Thai was amazing. Little Vietnamese restaurants here and there with amazing dishes- The Greek Kitchen- Gah! And those hippies made great pizza and hand-crafted beers at Moose's Tooth. Anchorage was a great experience for me from 91-99.

and there are even more great Thai and pho places. Our favorite is Pho Lena on Spenard. So delicious and one serving lasts me for three meals.

Hmong is the second most common foreign language spoken here, after Spanish.

but the articles I've read say that all the Anchorage high schools are in the top 1% nationwide for diversity. My oldest daughter went to Dimond. The other two went to West.
