Unlike last year, this St. David's Day, my daffs are still well encased in the frozen earth with not a hint of green peeking up in the garden.
But like last year, Google, UK gave us all a nice salute!

(26,298 posts)Hearing it from a native speaker, the dd is pronounced kind of like 'd' combined with a hard 'th', but the rest falls fairly phonetic.
I am just starting to pick up the language, and have discovered that you need a very agile tongue and, at times, a bit of phlegm in the back of your throat, to really sound authentic. I'll probably never be fully conversant, but I'm learning the pleasantries.

(63,912 posts)They probably got here in the mid 1800s (correct me if I am wrong...when WAS the Welsh migration to the US?). Oh, and my brother's name was David...
My Scottish side (Campbell and Brown) beat them by a half century (1790s).
I think there was a pesky Englishwoman in there somewhere...dang, I can't remember her name...

I had always been told that my Grandmother was Dutch. She had an unusual family name, so I did some research - turns out she was ENGLISH! I sometimes wonder if she told my Grandfather she was Dutch, because had he known she was English - well, that might have been a game changer! Her family has been her pre-Revolutionary War - apparently one of my ancestors was a General in the Colonial Army.
I embrace both bloodlines with pride.

(26,298 posts)It's such a melodic dialect. I read, somewhere, that the Welsh don't so much speak, as they sing.
