My grandson did this.

He had beautiful long (longer than Emily's!) pale blond hair, so beautiful that he was always being mistaken for a girl. That didn't seem to bother him at all, and when pressured to cut it, he insisted he was growing it for Locks for Love. When he finally did have it cut last fall, the donated tresses measured almost 12 inches.
