Yes, that was my knee jerk reaction. I'll be thinking about this, but my gut reaction was ugh. I think part of this is just the continuous shedding of anything reflective or time consuming. Everything has to be NOW, like those stupid credit card ads with cute little kids and the end the voice over intones "Now is better".
and the article makes reading sound like scrubbing toilets, a dreary "task". Reading continues to frequently be revelatory for me, just as it has been most of my life.
The time-consuming task of reading literary tomes like Moby Dick is about to change. Boston-based software developer Spritz has been working on a program that will be launched side-by-side with Samsung's new S5 smartphone and Gear 2.
The reading technology could easily outpace traditional reading methods -- such as skimming, scanning and detailed reading -- allowing readers to read at speeds that would enable them to finish a novel in an hour and a half
When reading a traditional book, the website explains, only around 20 percent of the reader's time is spent actually processing the content. Rather, 80 percent of the time is spent moving your eyes word from word and scanning for the "Optimal Recognition Point" (ORP).

(500 pages, 9pt type) in about 3 hours. The last time I was tested on retention/comprehension I was above 95%, but that was years ago. Like when the earth's crust formed.

(114,904 posts)but you seem incapable of even writing one sentence that's grammatically flawless, let alone a paragraph.
but, I love your the careless abandon with which you blithely ignore reality and fact, my dear pretz.

(12,157 posts)The better readers were forced to do a speed reading course. We used machines that had cards with words, phrases and longer phrases. There was a slot and shutter which would flash the word(s). The object was to train the eyes to taking in a longer phrase rather then word by word.
It worked but as I get older I find myself somethings misreading a phrase as something similar.

(23,156 posts)we also did a sort of speed reading course, although without the machines. I think I tested out at about 800 wpm, and I think I generally read at about the same rate these days.

(8,361 posts)As Palin was cramming for the many question she would be asked, John McCain and staff devised a new method whereby they would beat Sarah about the head with primers on a number of subjects with the hope she would absorb the entire contents after only 30 seconds of said beating.
McCain later copped to not really believing that learning method worked but still deriving great joy in the charade as the campaign wore on.

(14,554 posts)I don't think I'd ever use it for reading, say, a good novel or something like that, but for news articles and other such reading, I've found it really useful.

(15,539 posts)Do we not understand that reading is like a divine meal? It's meant to be done slowly and enjoyed not something we check off our "to do" list each day so we can get back to watching Honey Boo Boo or run up to the mall to walk around in circles looking at and buying more junk.
