To understand the situation we face finding the Malaysian Airlines plane, consider the following:

Suppose I ask you to find my car.

I can't remember where I parked it, but it's somewhere between Los Angeles and Las Vegas (250 miles),

And it's possible that I made a wrong turn and ended up in Arizona.

And it's also possible that I parked it underground.

That's the scale of the search that's currently underway.
