Prosecutors Investigate Port Authority Chairman

Federal prosecutors "have subpoenaed records from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey related to the business interests of its chairman, David Samson," the Wall Street Journal reports.

"The demand for records comes as scrutiny of Mr. Samson--a close ally of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie--has increased since allegations emerged that the Port Authority closed George Washington Bridge access lanes for political purposes."

its about time!

The investigation into Samson would be the third opened by federal prosecutors since the lane closings. The U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey is investigating that matter as well as claims by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer that the Christie administration withheld Hurricane Sandy aid because she would not support a politically connected development project.

Samson and his law firm have surfaced in both matters, but he was not known to be a target of prosecutors. The newest investigation, being undertaken by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, suggests he now may be a target.

Gov. Chris Christie tonight said he continues to back his embattled Port Authority chairman "strong and firmly," telling New Jersey 101.5 that he remains confident in David Samson's ability to preside over the bi-state agency despite the view of its executive director that Samson lacks the necessary moral authority.

"And I disagree with Pat Foye," Christie added, referring to the executive director.

I just went and looked at the video of that radio show. Christie brought his 10 year old daughter with him to appear on the show. He had her there with headphones and a microphone during the broadcast. You think this horse's ass was using his daughter to protect him from difficult questions?

There have been some clear violations of the law including retroactively changing some votes.

apparently withdrew the subpoenas this evening. It looks like they're going to turn the portion of the investigation they initiated over to NJ. Makes sense. It would be unusual for there to be competing investigations.

Feds withdraw subpoena of Port Authority chairman in conflict of interest investigation

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan took steps to open an inquiry into Port Authority Chairman David Samson late last week, only to withdraw their subpoena for records on Monday afternoon and cede control of any potential investigation to the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey, multiple sources said.

Although it was still unclear Monday night whether federal authorities in New Jersey would pick up the inquiry, the development represented a potentially troubling sign for a close adviser of Governor Christie who is the founder of a powerful law firm and was once New Jersey’s Attorney General.
