Amazon raising cost of Prime membership to $99/yr

Amazon announced on its home page today that it has raised the price of its Prime subscription service from $79 to $99 per year.
Prime gives you access to unlimited free two-day shipping on many items, plus access to thousands of streaming movies and TV shows through Amazon Instant Video, a service similar to Netflix. There have also been reports that Prime members will soon get access to a Spotify-like streaming music service.

Students with a .edu email address can sign up for Prime for $49 per year.

Amazon quietly announced the Prime price increase on its home page today. It won't go into effect for another week, and Amazon will let you sign up for the old $79 price until it does.

1. Don't know how "quietly" they announced it.

Amazon emailed me directly this morning announcing the change, and in the past few weeks there were news articles speculating the change.
It has been the same $$$ for years, so this isn't that unexpected.

2. Right now I am ticked off at Amazon. I ordered some compter stuff on Monday

and was supposed to get in mail today but according to my order account, they are still 'gathering' the items. I had not used Amazon for a few years--used to use it a lot for books--but my old account was still active once I plugged in my password. anyway, I am ticked. I am not a prime member.

3. I signed up for Amazon Prime last year when they offered a 30-day free membership.

Got a bunch of Christmas gifts with free speedy shipping, then dropped it before the free trial was over.

Should they offer the same deal again, I see no reason not to repeat.

Didn't like it, but still going to do it. I save way more than $100 a year on shipping charges.

Amazon Prime is a value. If it was just for the shipping alone it would be a value, but add in the video content and it gives me even more of a value.

I will not hesitate to reup my membership.

from today to sign up for the free 30 day trial followed by a full year at $79.

I've been wavering, might jump on it but I'll have to figure out if the shipping and prime free stuff is worth it to us.

and I've gotten the e-mail this morning in my Inbox notifying me of the $20 dollar hike.

We use Amazon a LOT (as most Asians do) and considering what I've bought in the past and how much I've saved on shipping costs, the $20 dollar hike for the membership isn't all that bad and we can absorb it in our budget.

Although I'm not happy with the price-hike, I will continue to be a Prime member until our budget says no more.

Once you are a Prime member, Amazon tends to become the default method for buying anything that you don't need right this second.

Still a bargain, especially if you stream the free movies & tv shows. I just ordered yesterday a new suitcase from Amazon with free shipping. I checked Kohls and the same suitcase was $40 more in the store.

I get free shipping, ability to barrow an e-book once a month and free streaming of movies and tv shows. I think it's a much better deal than Netflix because of the cost, free shipping and the e-boook.
