(36,063 posts)But seriously wouldn't you think terrorist or hostage takers would have claimed responsibility and/or sought ransom?
Renew Deal
(81,856 posts)Because taking responsibility is a suicide mission. If those people are alive somewhere, they will be found.
HereSince1628
(36,063 posts)an ambiguous disappearance can't say that.
If there is no connection made to the political cause, the act won't be seen as terror.
As for hostage taking...hostages are taken so they can be traded.
If no one knows they are on the market to be traded the hostage taker can't realize the value.

(36,926 posts)They work alone or in very small groups. Maybe they were on the plane and tried to hijack it, but something went terribly wrong and they crashed. Can't take responsibility if you're the only one who knows what you're going to do and you die before revealing yourself.

(9,213 posts)Really though I think it was hijacked and crashed into the Indian Ocean after a plane malfunction.
R B Garr
(16,950 posts)and ultimately into the ocean? I think it was maybe 4 to 5 years ago...? If I remember, the flight crew was unaware of the altitude changes and their slow descent because it was determined that there was a failure of the instruments that determine altitude, so there was no sudden cabin pressure changes or anything else alarming to the crew or passengers. I'm not sure of the technical terms, so I hope I'm describing the phenomenon okay. I'm not that great of a Googler either, or I would try to find the articles on this crash.
Maybe it was something like that, which would possibly account for the "ping" being detected for some time as the plane was slowly descending. I'm just wondering why -- if there was a hijacking or other chaos -- why no one was able to at least make a call or video from their cell phone or from a phone from the plane. This would also account for why there were no mayday calls from the pilots.
At this point, I would think that if it was terrorism, some group would have come forward to take credit and make the rest of the world cower in fear. Then again, if was an inside job like a pilot, who knows.
Beringia
(4,316 posts)Since it had mainly Chinese citizens, I would think terrorism linked to China. But China is keeping everything silent about it. Also easier to hijack the plane leaving from Malaysia. Why no one has been able to find it? Maybe China does not have very good surveillance technology?

(63,912 posts)point they know the plane took a different direction toward an area that they couldn't be traced in.
That explanation kinda makes sense to me. It would mean it was a suicide misision or became one...I wonder if they have info on the mental health/condition of the pilots...surely they must...
countryjake
(8,554 posts)It doesn't seem fair to me, considering that they really have no idea what happened to the plane or even where it might be, at this point. I get that speculation is necessary as part of investigation, but now it's nearing a smear of two pilots who may be completely innocent.
I have a friend whose daughter piloted a jet that crashed, killing both pilots and two passengers. I don't know if it was because a couple of people involved were slightly well-known or simply because the flight captain was a woman, but that crash was sensationalized to the max in the press, and that poor pilot was drug thru the mud by the media, devastating her friends and family. As it eventually turned out, she wasn't to blame...the plane she flew failed her, but, of course, the final conclusion of that investigation barely made a blip in the news.

(11,065 posts)Even when mechanical/technical failure is hands down absolutely proven, they still like to put something in there that somehow makes it at least partially the pilot's fault. Gotta protect the big companies that make the shoddy parts or their shoddy installation.
The one that pisses me off the most is the bogus claimed suicide of the pilot in the SilkAir Flight 185 disaster. There's no question that it was found positively to be a badly manufactured widget that caused the crash yet to this day the pilot is still believed to have committed suicide murdering all on board and for the most gross trumped up bullshit.
Excellent documentary about that flight...

on Sunday, as he was being "consulted" as an "expert". He brought up pilot-suicide and used the Silk Flight 185 as his example. I do believe that both our FAA and the NTSB will go to great lengths to shield US interests from lawsuits and possible financial liability. Boeing has been quiet as mouse throughout this whole thing and I would bet that none of our agencies are too keen on public discussion of any possible safety issues with their 777.
I'd already seen the documentary, when it first came out, and also, long ago our local newspaper did an entire investigation on its own, about the safety of the Boeing 737 (before that SilkAir crash). I found a page that links most all of those articles, you may be interested in reading them, here:

And here's another piece that just came out yesterday in the Seattle Times, from the AP:
