Leader of Ukraine’s Right Sector, revolution’s enforcers, rails against Putin, Russian military and Jewish oligarchs

KIEV — The man Russian President Vladimir Putin has cast as one of Europe’s potential new Adolf Hitlers is a little late for coffee on this Saturday morning.

Igor Mazur, or Topolya (Poplar) as he’s known because he’s 6’7”, is the leader of the Ukrainian Right Sector at Maidan, Kiev’s Independence Square. The Right Sector are the radical nationalists of this Ukrainian revolution. There are others: the right-wing Svoboda (Freedom) party, for one, which has an actual political following -- 12 percent of the vote in the last elections. It used to identify itself as a national socialist movement, just like the Nazis.

Russian fear, however, seems to be aimed at “the thugs and fascists from Maidan.” That is aimed at the Right Sector.

Mazur is their leader. Putin insists they are part of the group now calling the shots in the Ukrainian government, pulling strings from behind a curtain. In Crimea, Russian-backed political billboards for Sunday’s referendum on whether to secede from Ukraine clearly equate the Right Sector to Nazis. One depicts a Ukrainian future as wrapped in barbed wire and stamped with a Swastika.

Taras Berezovets, a political scientist and president of Berta Communications in Kiev, thinks Putin is making too much of fairly small group. Until recently, Right Sector had about 500 members. Today it may be 2,000. He said that it’s essentially attached to Svoboda, similar to what the Irish Republican Army was to the political Sinn Fein, at least in structure. But, he said, it’s far less dangerous.

all people who bill themselves as a "national socialist movement" are nazis? What a loaded piece of crap statement.

I do like what this statement from the leader: As for the notion that they are Europe’s new fascists, Mazur scoffs: “The Russians are Europe’s old fascists.”

Why doesn't the story mention how Right Sector doesn't support the EU agreement? Right Sector isn't truly part of the protesters because it doesn't support the West or Russia. In fact, they didn't form until after the protests started, it's basically football clubs that banded together. There is a concern though, because without political representatives, or a desire to be a part of the EU or CIS they might resist any future change. Add to that that they're basically thugs and they could be the ones who start violence.

Taras Berezovets is a lying asshole. Pravij Sector has over 9000 members that the EU know of with a caveat that that's a minimum figure because these guys don't come out to be counted. 9000 known members for an organization that just sprung up in late November 2013. And that's just Pravij Sector without counting Svoboda, White Hammer or the more extreme groups like Spilna Sprava (who call themselves the SS Stormtroopers) and number in the thousands. Who is this guy trying to fool?

15 years from now they'll come screaming that we need to go fight the fascists there, just like the little stunt they pulled after they financed Al Qaeda and feted them as "Freedom Fighters". Fuck em. We've seen this play too many times, including with the real Nazis.

People can't say they're not warned

Ukraine – second antisemitic broadcast in a month on Ukrainian television network

Source:

For the second time this month, the Ukrainian cable channel Antenna broadcast antisemitic statements. On February 13, the political analyst Igor Mazur spoke on the "Events, Facts, Commentary" program on the subject of Ukraine's partial rehabilitation of nationalists who fought against the USSR during World War II, some on the side of Nazi Germany. Reacting to a press conference in Moscow the day before, during which speakers blasted the Ukrainian government's recent actions on this issue, Mr. Mazur reportedly said that, "The kike-lovers and other freaks gathered in Moscow" and criticized Ukrainian politicians who "for the kike's money" betray their nation. "The task that the Jews have is not to allow the foundation of truly independent and strong states in Europe by healthy national forces," Mr. Mazur reportedly concluded. "Otherwise, their power will come to an end."
