Boehner rejects bipartisan plan as 'unworkable'By Lisa Mascaro

WASHINGTON A bipartisan bill to extend unemployment insurance for more than 2 million jobless Americans is poised to clear the Senate next week, but House Speaker John A. Boehner is raising new concerns that it could be costly for states to administer and could lead to fraud.
Boehner's objections echo warnings from the National Assn. of State Workforce Agencies, which has repeatedly urged Congress not to attach cumbersome new eligibility requirements. States have "antiquated" computer systems that cannot quickly implement new rules, the group warned Wednesday, and may end up giving aid to those who are ineligible.
The potential problems "are cause for serious concern," Boehner said, urging the Senate to shelve the legislation. "The bill is also simply unworkable."
Ten senators broke a stalemate to reach the bipartisan accord on the jobless aid package -- primarily by attaching Republican-led initiatives, such as prohibiting aid to millionaires. But the state workforce association, which represents state administrators responsible for implementing unemployment insurance, says the bill would be "very hard to administer."

Just another reminder of how important the 2014 elections are.

(30,439 posts)is that Republicans asked for these new requirements in order to pass the extension, but Boehner is rejecting the bill because the requirements are too cumbersome.
You just can't make this shit up.

(37,573 posts)if they dropped those "Republican-led initiatives"
I find it disgusting that millionaires even collect unemployment.
Not sure why it is so hard to make THEM ineligible. The state didn't have any problem declaring me ineligible when I told them I could not take a job on the day shift because of my business.
But it wasn't a computer system then either.

(27,315 posts)to vote for it are ridiculous and the bill is far too short (5 months) and would have to be revisited before the election.

(5,477 posts)We are five years into the recovery and the unemployment rate is below 7%. I personally think that it's probably a good time to stop extending benefits.

(5,477 posts)Employment is projected to reach pre-recession levels by june. We have reached a full recovery and it is unlikely the long term unemployment rate will dip much below 6%.
