I was a guest on a radio show today. What a hoot!

Syndicated show I never even listen to. They called me a couple of days ago to "be prepared." The producer called me this morning and i was on hold for 30 minutes until they put me on air. It was segment about cartooning for The New Yorker. I was on with a few famous New Yorker cartoonists...my angle was the dude who has never had a cartoon accepted by the New Yorker. I'm not sure if this was good or bad, but it was fun. Me and a few famous New Yorker cartoonists. They wanted my perspective about what it is like to submit cartoons and get rejected. Funny. A few friends and family actually heard the show.

How many have you had rejected. Can you post one of your favorites?

That was part of why I was a guest...Mankoff and Zeigler got rejected a bazillion times but finally made the cut. I didn't. My angle was that I've been to cocktails with Lee Lorenz and my aunt has had many illustrations published and a family friend has done many covers, yet "connections" mean nothing at The New Yorker. Mankoff and Zeigler confirmed that. Made me feel better.

I teamed with a writer several years ago. I drew, she wrote the gags...still didn't get anything accepted. It's a tough nut to crack.

I guess I meant to say, "I'm impressed; regardless of rejection."

The New Yorker is big time. I'm impressed that you went after it. I was just hoping you'd post one of your favorite (rejected) submissions.

I thought it was kind of funny that they played a video clip on a radio program.

Too funny. I didn't know anyone actually listened to this show. My son's friends think I'm some sort of rock star. Who the hell listens to radio anymore?

Bob Mankoff does more than like ping-pong. He is a man in efficient and focused motion as his paddle smacks each reply with the precision of a punch line. Bap. A forehand sharp as a verbal half-volley. Boop. A backhanded ball cut as thin as a slice-of-life joke. Bam. The clean put-away that requires an almost silly degree of exertion on what he says is a laughably small field of play. But then, this is what Mankoff has been doing most of his comedic career, too: Creating inventive angles and sly spins and rhythmic tricks with relentless attention to detail, as if necessity were the Jewish mother of invention.

Mankoff is a professional funnyman, and games call on many of his sharpest instincts. He has spent a life with his lanky frame hovering over a table, flicking his hand to deliver each sharp point. As a cartoonist and cartoon editor of the New Yorker magazine, humor has been a source of joy — and how he keeps score.
