(34,582 posts)I know people who are religious, and take things like the Sermon on the Mount to heart. They are good people. Unfortunately, too many people use religion as a crutch for their hate. And those same people are digging their tentacles into our government.

(82,849 posts)I will be the first to admit that my little congregation and its tiny denomination aren't real big on running to the popular media outlets to publicize our eleeomosynary efforts. We very quietly feed the hungry, house the homeless and assist in disasters. Understandably, the reporters and the writers gravitate to the first responders and their public information officers in an emergency.
When it comes to other topics, for some reason the cameras are focused on the float with the eight-foot penis at the Gay Pride Parade or the anarchist kids and their black masks during the peace demonstrations. Of course, whenever we do put out a media information kit or get interviewed, we receive all kinds of helpful advice with misquotations from the Sermon on the Mount. Sort of a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't reaction regardless of what we do.
So we decided long ago to just do the right thing and let go of the result. The folks on the front lines that we work beside know we've been there.

(276 posts)I have seen some ministers speak up down here in Fla against creationist attempts to get "equal time" for their particular brand of non science in science class and they were very effective when they did speak. But generally the press probably does prefer the crazies.
