Source: ABC News, 03/31/14: AP Sources: Health Law Sign-Ups on Track to Hit 7M
Beating expectations, President Barack Obama's health care overhaul was on track to sign up more than 7 million Americans for health insurance on deadline day Monday, government officials told The Associated Press.
...Two government officials confirmed the milestone, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter ahead of an official announcement.
OK, I've updated the "official projection" to 7,080,180 just for the hell of it, but I'm not trying to pretend that I had this thing nailed to the decimal point; my last real projection was between 6.9M - 7.0M, so I'm willing to divide 7,000,000 into whatever the final number is to find out how far off I am.
Believe me, I'd be perfectly happy if the final number as of 11:59pm ends up being 7.1M, 7.2M or even higher

(36,437 posts)Was the opening period really "disastrous?"
Can a project still be "disastrous" in any of its phases if it meets its benchmark projections?
They will keep saying "disastrous" of course, but it's clear as day: slow and steady wins the day.

(22,000 posts)that 10 million would have signed up. Oregon's health exchange had a tough start as well. Still I'm happy ecstatic the numbers came in as strong as they did.

(9,688 posts)How many of those 7 million are "the homeless (tm)"?
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)very few if any. "Homeless" sign-ups would probably be in the Medicaid expansion.

The Actual Numbers: 14.6 - 22.1 Million
by Charles Gaba on Tue, 04/01/2014 - 12:58am
7.08 Million Exchange-based QHPs (estimate)
+ 71,000 SHOP QHPs
+ 9.0 Million total OFF-Exchange QHPs (estimate from the Rand Corp.)
+ 4.71 Million New "Strict Expansion" Medicaid enrollees
+ 1.80 Million New "Woodworker" Medicaid enrollees (estimate)
+ 3.10 Million 19-26 Year Olds on their Parent's Plans (estimate)
- 3.70 Million Cancelled Non-Compliant Policies
(see? I told you I'd subtract these once I knew the total number of off-exchange QHPs!)
= appx. 22.1 Million People (at the high end) or 14.6 Million (at the low end)
Have you not been paying attention?
Edit to add: Medicaid enrollment does not stop. This deadline is only for private insurance policies. Homeless people can still gain insurance by signing up for Medicaid if they have not already.

(9,688 posts)Wasn't paying attention to the fact that low number (7 million) was only for "Marketplace purchases" and didn't account for "direct purchases" (even when the people fall into the same risk groups) or, I suppose, medicaid enrollments.
But even 18 million (splitting the difference) is a low number compared to the general population and I don't see how it can account for the very poor and/or homeless...

(22,308 posts)which was passed when we had control of both houses of congress and signed into law by Pres. Obama.
Then add the fact that employer based health care is now required by every company with more than 49 employees (edit to add: working over 30 hours a week).
The estimate for uninsured varied, but 42 million was a reasonable average of the estimates (if memory serves). I dare say that the number of uninsured has been cut in half since President Obama was elected.
Sure, if you want to compare it to over 300 million it doesn't seem like much. That isn't fair though. Most people had insurance already. When talking about newly covered individuals, the people who already had insurance are not part of that narrowly focused conversation.
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Sign-ups only cover people who newly enter that insurance program. So it doesn't cover the people who were already on Medicaid, for example.
Additionally, you're leaving out other insurance programs. Medicare covers about 50M people. VA covers another large group of people. And there's also the very large number of people who get employer-based insurance - that alone covers the majority of the 315M. For now.
