MOUNT PERRY When multiple dogs at Blue Ribbon Labradors began getting sick, Michelle Woods first thought was parvovirus.
The symptoms seemed to fit, and the fact it was spreading so quickly seemed to confirm it in her mind. Wood never would have thought the dogs had been poisoned, but their veterinarian confirmed antifreeze was the cause of all their problems.
You just never dream someone would do anything to harm these animals, she said. You just rack your brain trying to understand it. We sit around and think, Who could have done this?
Wood and her parents, Don and Valeria Butts, who own Blue Ribbon Labradors, think someone intentionally poisoned nearly 20 of their dogs with antifreeze.

(14,733 posts)at least some common kinds of antifreeze can involve drinking alcohol, such as vodka.
Way back in the day, a mental patient came through who tried to commit suicide by drinking antifreeze, but didn't care for the taste, so had mixed it into margaritas, which actually saved her life.
Sadly, it takes very little to fatally poison a pet (or child) because of their small body mass. One place I've read suggested a cat could die merely from walking through a puddle of it and then licking its paws.
I try to only ever buy any when we're completely out, so that I don't have a bottle sitting around that might crack or spill.

(22,651 posts)back in the old days I worked for a lot of Vets. Yes, the treatment for a pet that got into antifreeze was alcohol in the IV. Most pets survived if owner got them in fast enough.
