House GOP Budget Unveiled: Cuts to Food Stamps, Health Care, Pell Grants and Federal Pensions

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan is rolling out an updated budget plan that would slash $5.1 trillion in federal spending over the coming decade. The Republican proposal also would balance the government's books by cutting food stamps, health care for the poor and working class, and programs like Pell Grants for low-income college students and pensions for federal workers.

Ryan's plan steers away from cuts to benefits for senior citizens, at least in the short term, but reprises a voucher-like Medicare program for future retirees that provides the basis for GOP claims that the measure would drive down government debt over the long term.

The plan promises a balanced budget within a decade and should skate through the Budget Committee on Wednesday. Floor action next week is less certain.

Sometimes I just sit 7 feel waves of despair washing over me.

Then, somehow, I pick my ass back up out of the ditch & go plugging on back into into the battle, in my meager way.

I can't believe people are so stupid to vote for rethugs who want to destroy this country. Outlawing birth control, cutting off funds for mass transportation ( tenn) and let the Kochsuckers take over their local governments. I feel sadness all the time now.i grew up in the 60's and 70's. Good public schools, affordable access to healthcare, funded social programs. The people who benefited from the union wages are the ones who voted for Reagan and started this country downhill. I'm a boomer nd I don't know if I will ever be able to retire let lone find a decent paying job.

ESPECIALLY when all seems hopeless.

Ryan wants to divide and conquer. He doesn't want to piss off Seniors in an election year, so he spares them any pain while slashing everything else. Except, I'm sure, the holy grail that is the Defense Budget.
