So my club is not open yet and I got the itch to golf so I drove out to the suburbs this morning to play (too cold and windy but I did it).
So I get to this course that is over 100 years old and is going to undergo a major renovation. It was scheduled to start this summer so I ask some of the guys working there when it is supposed to start. It turns out the project is being delayed a year or two because the Army Corps of Engineers has concerns about stormwater retention and is doing a study.
So the guys there start complaining about the "government". First guy drops my headline here, nest guy says the government always screws things up, etc and they are just yukking it up.
Thing is, the course where I was at was owned by the county government! THese guys, who were complaining about governmental incompetence, were government employees!!
I just shook my head and walked to the first tee.

(39,343 posts)I don't know who they think "the Government" is. Amongst my family who hate "the Government" are a retired Army Corps of Engineer emp, four vets, a mailman, a cop, a state prosecutor, a fireman, public school teacher, and a state health department worker.
Um guys, you ARE THE GOVERNMENT.

(25,704 posts)I quit after 14 because I was too cold. Constant 2 club wind, gusts up to 4 club wind. Almost holed out a 40 yard bunker shot on 14, figured just end the day on a par.

(14,560 posts)Their government is A-OK. And by the way, if golfers had been swallowed up in a sink hole
on that course before the testing started they would have screamed about how the government failed.
LOSERS...

(23,926 posts)It was cool and cloudy, but NO PRECIP! Even better, the course told us to play lift, clean, and place, so that saved me probably three strokes right there! (42, 6 over, for 9, and this early in the season I'm more than satisfied with that.)

(25,704 posts)Top five windiest time I ever played golf. The other five were par, bogey, double, par. The record was Crooked Stick in 1990 and when you get on Crooked Stick, you go.

(5,901 posts)I responded, "Yeah, you mean like the aftermath of Hurricane Ike in 2008 when FEMA set up camp 1/2 mile down the road with bottled water, ice, and food? Yes, the government was a huge help on the ground for at least a month after that disaster."
No response. But I hope he thinks before throwing that sarcastic line around so easily.

and I do help.
But sometimes they do create obstacles and expenses and are a pain to try to reason with.
