Just saw "Winter Soldier" last night, and it's as close as we're gonna get, in the current studio system, to a political thriller that addresses, fairly directly, the abuses of info-gathering by government agencies, the agendas of the "Deep State" (though that particular phrase isn't used) vs. the publicly stated, PR-tinged ones, etc.
Hell, the movie even brings up "Operation Paperclip," and suggests the Nazi toxins our government deliberately injected itself with continue to affect ("infect?" us to this day.
All done with hyperbolic action sequences, of course (but well-staged ones) but I'm not sure any other large-scale film this year is going to touch on our continued erosion of freedom and privacy in such a direct (i.e., critical to the plot) way.

(29,414 posts)I did get the impression of secrecy and similar ideas as you've suggested just from the previews and ads. Even as it's an action movie, just whatever the character played by Robert Redford is suggests that deeper underpinnings of secret stuff. I know I'm not making much sense, just that it seems like a compelling movie even beyond the action sequences

(29,414 posts)He's such a versatile actor. Of course, I'm also kind of expecting him to be like his "Sneakers" character in some respects

(29,414 posts)And, it looks like he's just completed a movie called The Angriest Man in Brooklyn. It also appears to have a great cast: Mila Kunis, Peter Dinklage, Robin Williams, and James Earl Jones! (plus many others, at the link.)

(4,876 posts)all the reviews I have read basically agree with you... I couldn't figure out how they got Redford to "cash in" in a super hero movie but judging from what you say and the reviews, this is no ordinary comic book movie..

(6,399 posts)It's something that's been covered in comics for years.
But hey, comics are for kids, so who would think deep and important issues could be covered in there. Or that superheroes could symbolize something else.
Captain America in particular has a lot of good themes to work with and we've seen a number of iterations over the years with how he deals with America and the world. Same with Superman and many others.

(36,988 posts)and watch the new capt film now
Redford chooses his films carefully and wouldn't put his energy into something he didn't believe in.
I can't believe he's in this film.......damn thanks for the heads up.

(11,175 posts)I sometimes read Captain America stories as a kid, but I haven't kept up with the continuity and I didn't see any of the other movies in which he appears. Can I just go into this one cold, or is there backstory that's needed?
villager
(26,001 posts)Falcon's first movie appearance (previously just in comics), and Black Widow from general Marvel continuity in "The Avengers," etc.
Plus, of course, the "3 Days of the Condor" reversals are a little more interesting when steeped in previous "SHIELD" mythos.
But generally speaking, you should be fine heading into it cold...
