Tue Apr 1, 2014, 09:20 PM
Apr 2014

A magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck Tuesday evening off northern Chile, triggering a tsunami warning for the South American coast.

The powerful quake's epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean about 60 miles northwest of Iquique, Chile, and 12.5 miles deep, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake occurred at 8:46 p.m. local time (7:46 p.m. ET).

A tsunami warning was issued for the coasts of Chile, Peru and Ecuador, while high-wave watches were posted for residents of coastal Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

Waves about 6 feet high hit cities along the northern coast, the Associated Press reported. There were no immediate reports of possible damage or casualties.

NOAA added that Hawaii could be put on warning or watch status as the quake and tsunami are evaluated. The earliest that waves might reach the island would be about 3:25 a.m. Wednesday (9:25 a.m. ET).

to have a rogue wave--or tsunami--heading your way out in the middle of the ocean.

Ships in port are at risk from a tsunami, but a tsunami traveling in deep water distributes its energy along its very long length. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't even be noticed.

At around a frequency of 2.5 Hz, a broad peak appears which is due to crustal resonances; this is the "ringing" of the Earth's crust, driven by the motion of the tectonic plates of the crust. These standing waves are most noticeable following an earthquake when the Earth has been described as "ringing like a bell" !

The difference in the arrival time of wavefronts produced by earthquakes (or for that matter underground nuclear explosions) allows the position of the event to be determined. The P- and S-waves pass throught the body of the Earth at different speeds, as do the surface waves as they propagate around the Earth's crust, all arriving at the detection point(s) at different times...

The head of the Cabinet for President Michelle Bachellet has indicated that the armed forces and police have taken control over the city of Iquiqie, at 1287 km to the north of Santiago. where about three hundred women have escaped from jail. At this moment, at night, the city only has 10% of electrical (service)

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND
COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE
EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

FOR ALL AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL
CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE
ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS
WITHIN THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL
ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE
LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN
SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

Now, the twitter has it's lovely risks. One tweet is making the rounds that Seismologists are now saying this is not the worst they predicted. First off, none in that business predicts, second nerves are way raw.

But hey, it is the twitter, what do you do?

Find it on twitter and either go get the info yourself (too far south) or find it in media. I give it ten minutes, also Bachellet was going to speak, and that should have happened by now. She is the President.

Santiago.

Santiago, Chilean authorities have confirmed the death of five people due to the 8.2 Richter Scale quake that affected Chile, a country currently under a Tsunami alert and has evacuated thousands of people from it's coast, approximately 4 thousand kilometers.

The cause of the deaths were heart attacks and collapsed areas, said the Interior Chilean Minisgter Rodribo Penalillo, without identifyting the victims. Two of the deaths happened in the province of Iquiique.

After the quake, the alarm for a tsunami was activated, and in some places water did back away upwards of 2.5 meters ( five feet), therefore they are monitoring the changes in the waves, since this change would indicate the arrival of a tsunami wave.

Now color me officially impressed, they have evacuated 80K people so far.

And my local nooz is surprised (local geologist who should know better) that the damage has been pretty light.

Chile, due to it's seismic activity, has pretty good, to excellent seismic building standards. We could learn a few lessons.

52. Deadly 8.2 Earthquake Strikes Off Chile Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued (NBC News)
Wed Apr 2, 2014, 12:29 AM
Apr 2014

A massive earthquake struck off the coast of Chile late Tuesday near the port city of Iquique, according to the U.S. Geological Survey — killing five, injuring three, and triggering tsunami warnings for a long arm of Latin America’s Pacific coast.

The dead include four men and one woman, who died from falling debris or heart attacks. Chile's interior minister said. The mayor of Tarapaca in northern Chile attributed the deaths to cardiac arrest.

The magnitude 8.2 temblor struck roughly 62 miles northwest of Iquique and was shallow at 12.5 miles below the seabed, the USGS said.

Officials urged all residents near coastal areas to evacuate inland because of tsunami fears, but warned warned people to exercise caution while doing so.

And will travel tomorrow to the affected area. This is through the twitter feed via several Chilean news outlets. they are also sending high ranking Chilean officers to the area, and she has cleared her schedule to deal with this.

She has also assured the population that measures have been taken to protect life and property, and the declaration of disaster zone has been issued.

I am falling asleep.

And the only thing going over the tweeter sphere that has yet to be confirmed to my satisfaction is actually the missing kids angle. There are photos and all that, but ONLY ONE media source is reporting on that. And they are not even using qualifiers like "social media has reports" But nothing from officials.

Good (sadly) exercise for me though and it kept us informed.

Should not have checked the twitter

There are several children lost at a police station in Iquique

So I think that is going to shake itself up, and apparently something similar happened in 2010
