(25,938 posts)keep in mind that many streets - notably Tulane Avenue - have the 'no left turn' rule. I found this out the hard way during Mardi Gras one year. I was fortunate in that the cop, who was facing me going the other way, merely announced the error of my ways on his loudspeaker instead of writing me a ticket.

(109 posts)I work for USPS. Motto at my office is "when in doubt, turn right". 99%, if I'm on a new route (I'm a sub) that's the correct answer. Actually the motto is "follow the mail", but I don't think UPS drivers get such luxuries to have their next stop the next box. I see them every day, and they are awesome. Still can't believe they are allowed to run!

(23,156 posts)J. Edgar Hoover was notorious for insisting any vehicle he was in not make left hand turns.
As a normal driver of a car (I've never driven any kind of large van or delivery vehicle) I'd say that far less time and fuel is wasted making a left hand turn than would be used by going all the way around the block, which is what the three rights involve, instead. Twenty seconds, maybe thirty of waiting, then turn as compared to go right, take thirty seconds or more to get to the end of the block, turn right again, another thirty seconds, and the final right had turn and again at least thirty seconds of driving. The exact number will vary, depending on the city, but still. I'll defy anyone to clock it out for wherever they live and report back.
Oh, and that will only work in cities that have neatly arranged rectangular or square blocks. Just try that in a city like Santa Fe, where if you miss the one left hand turn you'll drive three miles to make the series of rights.
