Del. 'Tent City' homeless ordered off land
James Fisher, The (Wilmington, Del.) News Journal 8:38 p.m. EDT April 4, 2014
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. -- An encampment of homeless people living in tents in the woods steps away from the Delaware 1 corridor near Rehoboth Beach must leave by this weekend, police say, after the owner of the land they're on said he wanted them to go.
Their displacement comes a few months after Sussex County government sent a letter to the landowner, Robert B. Hood LLC of Snohomish, Wash., noting the commercially zoned land could not be used as a homeless camp.
"The use of this property for a park or campground for homeless people is illegal," the letter from the county's Planning & Zoning office said. "A field inspection conducted on Dec. 20, 2013, verified this illegal activity."
Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police said Hood, the landowner, called police this week to ask that anyone living on his property be evicted.
