The United States has had a trade embargo against Cuba for more than 50 years, but according to the latest survey, a majority of Americans favor normalizing relations with the Communist regime.

In the poll commissioned by the Atlantic Council released Tuesday, 56 percent of Americans nationwide support changing the U.S. policy on Cuba. Among Floridians, that number goes up to 63 percent and 62 percent for Latinos overall nationwide.

The poll was conducted by the bipartisan team of Democratic strategist Paul Maslin and Republican strategist Glen Bolger. It sampled 1,024 American adults selected randomly Jan. 7-22 in both English and Spanish. It had an oversampling of 617 Floridians and 525 Latinos. The margin of error was +/- 3.1 percent.

While Democrats support the policy change more than Republicans, 52 percent of Republicans also said they would support normalizing relations with Cuba.

Cuba for years. I keep hearing how tough things are for the locals even though they have the most gorgeous country. Normalizing relations would be the stuff of American dreams.

and a relic of the cold war.

there's no need to keep from trading with Cuba - esp. knowing Nixon opened up China... but he had conservative critics for that move too.

To expect any sort of logical consistency, tho, requires you to ignore what has been an important voting bloc in Florida that wanted to punish Cuba.

Who is gaining, finacially and politically, by the US' embargo against Cuba? Someone, somewhere must be.

such negativity would make people happy. Better to open up to Cuba and see a huge business & building boom that would benefit Florida. Emotional growth is always the best course of action.

11. Nobody; the Batista diehards don't want Americans to see that Cuba isn't a hellscape

It really is that simple. There's not a single American company that couldn't make more money if the embargo were lifted. Even tobacco companies are chomping at the bit here, surprising as that may sound: they really want to export Marlboro Reds to the island and import those wonderful Cohibas.
