(377 posts)There's a powerful group of the "Invincibles" in Ann Arbor that want us all to bicycle everywhere, just like Chinese and Europeans.
Thing is:
1. This is not a good place to bicycle.
Ann Arbor has lots of high hills, traffic congestion due to a lack of through-going roads, now made worse by mandated bicycle lanes, ENORMOUS potholes due to a horrible winter, and very long winters that would be suicide to bicycle in.
2. Not everyone can or should bicycle.
The number of elderly and disabled in Ann Arbor is higher than average. Even able people cannot bring home their shopping on bicycles, unless they do nothing but shop and carry one bagload at a time. It's not as if businesses deliver anymore, and if they did, the diesel pollution would skyrocket.
3. Commuting on a bicycle is limited to a very small range.
Since Pfizer bought up and shut down the second largest employer in the city, good jobs have been rather scarce, and the not-so-good jobs are drying up due to falling demand. Unless the plan is to return to the 1800's and draft horses, something has got to give.
And still, they keep trying to turn parking lots into green spaces, narrowing the streets for bicycles who don't seem intent on following the rules of the road, and banning on-street parking...
