I got a decent job again today
I've been unemployed and working crap part time/temp jobs for almost four years now. I went in this morning for what I was told would be a first interview with the hiring manager. It was supposed to go for a half hour... After a little over an hour, she asked me if I would mind sticking around and talking to their technical guy and I did... I spoke with him for another hour until the manager came back with the rest of the team to talk with them for another 45 minutes.
I'd left knowing I'd nailed it... All of the technical questions correct, agreement on methodology and a good personal connection with everyone I'd spoken with.... I'd also been there before a number of times over the last few years and still managed to not get the job.
About an hour after I got home, they called and made the offer and I took it without a seconds hesitation. A lot less then what I used to make but a lot more then what I have been making and well above the average so... All in all, I'm pretty happy about it.

(21,748 posts)The company is bringing in a bunch of their IT back in house after having it over seas for the last decade... They are hiring three of us to start the job of knowledge transfer back in house. It will be a challenge but they are not using anything I've not worked with before (a lot) so I feel pretty confident.

(21,748 posts)They really do look like a good place to work... They are in an office park and the campus is beautiful. There is a big paved area right in front with a section of it roped off and it has a sign that says 'For Expectant Mothers'... heh, I've never seen that before... I think it's good to see a company that does little things like that.

(10,952 posts)Best wishes on your new job. It sounds like you were just the kind of employee they were looking for. It is fabulous that they were able to have you talk with all the right people in one long series of meetings. That shows that they were really interested in you and that has got to make you feel really great!
Ohio Joe
(21,748 posts)When I was talking with the hiring manager, I could tell she was someone who had gotten her position by moving up through the ranks and actually knew how the job played out on a day by day basis. As I answered each question, I could tell we were very much on the same page as to how to do things. I'm really looking forward to working for her, she knows her stuff.

(21,748 posts)Some other good news about this employer I've been saving just for you They have no drug testing and even told me (unprompted, they just volunteered it), they are fine with employees using marijuana now that it is legal, just not while working... They consider it exactly the same as alcohol. So I won't have any worries there either
One day I hope to visit Colorado to see what all the fuss is about.
And it's nice to see employers treat employees like people with the right to make their own choices responsibly.

(14,012 posts)Congrats to you. Your story is inspirational.
Your saying you got the call with an offer, reminded me of when my younger brother got his first big reporting job at a national paper.
When the department head made him the salary offer my brother was so astonished at how much is was that he sat silent, dumbstruck. The man stammered a moment and said, okay, how about ($15,000) more? And my brother said Oh yes! He later wondered what the guy might have offered if he had stay quiet a little longer!
Cheers!
