The thought of them never coming back was sobering beyond comprehension.

He said that nobody at NASA had the slightest hope that they'd make it home. But they went through the motions of trying to do it any way, they gave it their all.
And, Holy #%^+!, they figured out how to do it.

I was at NASA Houston during Apollo 13, and no one expected them to make it.
