edgineered
(2,101 posts)if you look at the demographics. Where do you find that many very conservative of such a young age?
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)how many women are really going to want to be apart of a mens' rights group, anyway? Frankly, I'm surprised there were any women at all.
edgineered
(2,101 posts)who had the courage to go there went in attempting to bring the voice of reason, and possibly diminish the gap. On the other hand, maybe they were the 13 year old group thinking that age makes boys into men.
etherealtruth
(22,165 posts)Without doubt.
Not even a surprise that the only issue of concern is an issue that could directly impact them.
Schema Thing
(10,283 posts)almost exclusively 17-20 yo? c'mon.
This would be an interesting poll to create, in a non-bullshit fashion.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)saying, in a couple years, we see a significant increase in the next age group and the 17-20 stays about the same.
that this mentality is relatively new, really effecting our young men.
i can see that insight needed.
Schema Thing
(10,283 posts)with a very specific sampling.
IOW, not even a little bit accurate.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)It would also be interesting to see if the petering out of the numbers hold stating maturity is the answer

(34,582 posts)I call bullshit. Religion is one of the biggest drivers of mysogany.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)that being said, the popular evo psych today is a science, that has taken the place of religion supporting the patriarchy thru dominance and control. that is being taught in our universities.
and i absolutely agree religion is a huge culprit in misogyny. so not make less that point.
redqueen
(115,103 posts)He has lots of atheist, misogynist, MRA fans.
awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)but religions, especially the fundie ones, go out of their way to tell women they are second class citizens, and to shut up, get in the kitchen, and submit to the will of their husbands.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)degrade, humiliate, submit, abuse, control, dominate the woman.
i can not say that religion has a greater hold in the u.s. than porn. can you? and both are doing the same.
the answer for the non religious and confirmation for the religious is evo psych that does the same that religion does. no difference. all ugly.
it is a mans issue, not a religion or party issue. is our point. and we women are not gonna pretend otherwise, or we are not doing our job. we would be slacking. or coddling cause others do not want to hear it especially on this board.
NOW... i have to qualify. cause NONE of this is to you, personally.
awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)I can only go from my experience. Down here, porn and religion seem to hold equal sway. While both are bad, only one wants to deny reproductive rights, equal pay, etc, to women.
Jamaal510
(10,893 posts)some of the AmazingAtheist's videos on YouTube. I used the think he was alright, but his anti-feminist videos kinda raised a red flag for me, plus I think he even had a video about impeaching Obama...
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)not sure what popular atheist. see how much i do not know. but i have heard enough to know it is an issue even with atheists.

awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)because I try not to associate with assholes. All I know of them is what I read here, and what I have seen has not been good. I will look up evo-psych- that is a new one to me.

(16,184 posts)I couldn't possibly hold any lower an opinion of the self-entitled, smartest-guy-in-the-room shits that think getting bullied in high school or not getting dates grants them the right to treat women like shit.
It's to be expected out of fundamentalists.

awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)what I am saying is that in a country where 70% claim to be christian, 99% of the respondants in this poll said they were atheist/not religious. Statistically it doesn't make sense.

(34,582 posts)down here, being "born again" is cool. Hell, you can't watch a football game without 30 instances of people praising god for some catch they made. Sorry, drifted there. I have told this story before, but will tell it again. About 5 or 6 years ago I took a US Government course at the local community college. The class was pretty equally split male/female. Me and another dude were old timers, around 40. After we got through the Roe v Wade decision, the professor asked how many supported it. Me and the other old guy were the only ones. I was floored. Not one young woman in that class supported her right to make a medical decision with her doctor in privacy? One did start to speak up about god's word, but she got shut down pretty quick. The professor let her know this was a classroom and not church.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)would talk to me about it with his classes. i do not think that class would be split so drastically. that was not that long ago for you.
awoke_in_2003
(34,582 posts)and it really shocked me. My grandmother's both entered the work force during WWII, and proved they could do any job a man could do. After the war, they worked along side their husbands until the day they died. They were strong women who took no one's crap, yet always made me feel loved. My mother was the same type of woman. She was strong, and always found a way to help those who needed it. The submissive woman is something I do not understand. The thought of my wife subjegating herself to me has zero appeal. Oh, we fight and fuss sometimes, but I wouldn't want a Stepford wife. We are equals, and all good partnerships should be that way.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)my niece is gonna shit from the conversation we had just last night about this and men. 88% 17-20 in age. and they are strong conservative STONERS lol lol.
omg.... men are largely more disadvantaged than women
very interesting. thank you so much scorp. very interesting.

(1,115 posts)The poll was of reddit, not a scientific study. It would be no different than coming to HoF and asking similar questions. The results will be unreliable.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)hearing so many guys this age saying it. not to mention, that reddit is geared more to that age anyway, lol
thanks for the info

(34,582 posts)but then I didn't freak out when my 4 year old grandson wanted his toe nails painted because his 12 year old sister, the love of his life, was painting hers. My sister was raped in college, and the police didn't do shit about it because she had 3 or 4 beers. I am anti death penalty, but rape and child molestation really make me question my stance.

(1,115 posts)So in essence they have ZERO value. I would like to see a scientific study done asking the same questions.
MrScorpio
(73,631 posts)Probably the best example of an MRA central on the net.
I suggest that you go in there and tell them that their opinion has no value.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)they organize shit like..... go after school rape programs putting in a bunch of false claims, exercises and other activities, from reddit.
i am remembering.
mythology
(9,527 posts)The fact that it's internet only is one major factor, the fact that's it's a reddit forum is another. You simply can't assume that this is representative of the group as a whole any more than you can take the population of DU as representative of the general Democratic or even liberal spectrum of the U.S.

(115,103 posts)They're a sizable group, but I would hesitate to say they represent all of them. There are a lot of men out there who are working very hard to maintain the status quo / push back against the gains feminism has made.
These articles describe the organized groups who fight against feminism. It's more than just angry young men on the net.

(35,015 posts)Grover Norquist and Co. are about to take up the banner of national weed legalization and demonize Democrats, portraying them as anti-weed. This is the shit they're really really good at - black is white, up is down.
How do Dems reach this demographic when they're so far out there? That's what has me worried.

(4,475 posts)Not in the slightest bit surprising. Testosterone poisoned over-confident immature morons who think the world owes them something just because they happen to own a penis. This demographic has always been with us; now they just have something new to call themselves. The good news is that at least some of them will grow up.

(110,159 posts)hormone estrogen. is. i would like the excuse of estrogen, with everything i do as a woman. that ole estrogen. all the friggin's time.
sigh...
you post is right on. i agree withyou. i appreciate you. but i am really tired of the god like status of testosterone. we as a society has elevated that hormone to such fuggin awesome, it has an entity of its own. and this.... would be the first step to addressing these immature little shits. they really are not all that. yet... we feed right into the glory of testosterone.... in all its awesomeness.

(21,786 posts)if they don't want people to think they are then they should probably stop posting MRA talking points and popping up in threads on feminist issues to whine "but what about the men"? (Because obviously the one to five percent of rape allegations that are false is more important than the 25 percent of women who are raped in their lifetimes, and the fact that David Beckham was in a Calvin Klein ad means that sexual objectification affects men just as much as women, apparently. )

(340 posts)Searching "feminist demographics" mainly yields explicitly anti-feminist sites and statistics on the percentage of women who identify as feminists.
Since many people first really embrace feminism in college and because college is more affordable for middle class people (who are more likely to be white) than lower class people, it's not entirely inconceivable that feminists are disproportionately white, though I doubt it would be to the degree we see with MRAs.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)i wouldnt argue that the majority are probably white. for the reason you state. but, i do not like to say something factual, when i do not know. how stupid is that, lol. it may well be. it makes sense. but, my point was certainly how you conclude. " I doubt it would be to the degree we see with MRAs." , which is the absurdity harmony was suggesting.
and i know in the early times it has been alomost exclusively white. but, feminism got a slap in the face and a wake up call in the 60;s and 70's this was the case and i think women have come a long way to be inclusive. today i think feminism and voice is more universal that in the apst, by a long shot
thanks for the efforts though.

As for the racial demographic, that was my sense all along. Men of color experience real discrimination. They don't need to invent angst about how oppressed they are by women.

(21,755 posts)I find it very telling.
Because a majority of MRA's are made up of a certain demographic, it is not a logical conclusion to assume most of that demographic are MRA's.
