Fukushima reactor shows radiation levels much higher than thought
Damage from disaster so severe that clean-up expected to take decades, according to latest examination of nuclear plant
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2012/mar/28/fukushima-reactor-radiation-levels
<snip>
One of Japan's crippled nuclear reactors still has fatally high radiation levels and much less water to cool it than officials estimated, according to an internal examination that renews doubts about the plant's stability.
A tool equipped with a tiny video camera, a thermometer, a dosimeter and a water gauge was used to assess damage inside the number two reactor's containment chamber for the second time since the tsunami swept into the Fukushima Daiichi plant, a year ago.
The data shows the damage from the disaster is so severe the plant operator will have to develop special equipment and technology to tolerate the harsh environment, and decommission the plant. The process is expected to last decades.
The other two reactors that had meltdowns could be in even worse shape. The number two reactor is the only one officials have been able to closely examine so far.
Tuesday's examination, with an industrial endoscope, detected radiation levels up to 10 times the fatal dose inside the chamber.

(51,076 posts)Some here stand out from the rest and these two definitely are in that class. We mustn't forget 'sister either.
Nuclear energy is the most dangerous mode of providing energy that man has come up with yet as this shows. If the world and all things in it were perfect maybe then it wouldn't be so dangerous but last I checked that wasn't the case.

(8,267 posts)There are a number of DUers (self included) who from the beginning asserted that Fukushima is the worst nuclear disaster to date, and will produce deadly amounts of radioactivity for an obscene amount of time. Some of us (self included) were chided by pro-nuclear power DUers for 'not understanding' the importance of nuclear power as a 'cheap' source of electricity.
My earliest activism (other than working with Amnesty International) was focused on preventing the construction of nuclear power plants. I and many of my fellow activists had read Anna Gyorgy and Friends' No Nukes, and were acutely aware of the lies being told and the nicely-packaged propaganda disseminated widely to the Hoi Polloi.
Oh, yes, nuclear energy is 'clean and cheap.' Tell that the the hundreds of thousands of Japanese who will be most directly impacted by this disaster...

(154,021 posts)That was one of the arguments made. My all time fav, flying transcontinental...that's the ammount of radiation you will get. In fairness, that is probably what you got, the west coast of British Columbia, a tad more.

Sure they've sugar-coated the bad news all along. Those guys will do anything to hold on to a dollar. Things like building that plant there to start with.

(269,750 posts)I blame the Japanese politicians way more than the foreign corporations that set up the nuke plants.
Japanese know their earthquake history as well as they know the devastation as a result of being nuked.

Didn't your mommy teach you any manners? There are plenty of threads where you could diss Nadine and her positions. This was not supposed to be one of them.
