Outside Northrop Auditorium, about 100 demonstrators carried protest signs and sang old antiwar songs.
But during her 45 minutes on stage Thursday afternoon, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice only fleetingly acknowledged the stir that accompanied her appearance at the University of Minnesota.
Yes, she said, theres still controversy about things we were involved in. I understand that. But she offered no apologies for her role in the Bush administrations war on terror. In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, she said, we kept the nation safe.
Rice, who is now a professor at Stanford University, was invited to talk about the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act as part of the Distinguished Carlson Lecture Series, which is sponsored by the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
Her appearance had triggered a campuswide debate after faculty and student activists started a campaign to get her speaking invitation revoked, saying she shared the blame for the torture of detainees and other wartime abuses.
University officials, however, dismissed the criticism as a misguided attack on free speech.

(13,685 posts)I mean who could ever imagine a criminal claiming they were innocent?
That just doesn't happen very often.

Thing is, if keeping us safe meant letting it happen, then invading two countries that were no threat, and spending trillion$ and killing thousands because of the failure of her-rice/bush/cheney to keep us safe.....
Wait... WTF, how did all that happen and she isn't in jail, but gets paid to speak....? My Gawd this country is doomed. Sorry, kids, some of us tried. We've failed. Sorry......

(13,685 posts)And even here on DU we have people covering for them. They say we can't do anything, that we are useless when faced with such power.
Well, some of us have tried to get justice. There just weren't enough. Sorry, kids.

Hard to believe she is a professor at Stanford. Makes me think less of that school.
"a misguided attack on free speech" -- this is nothing but the promotion of revisionist history having strong similarities with repressive regimes we are familiar with.

I don't give two flips about her views on civil rights and if that's the best speaker that University could find, then shame on them.
They forgot about her history as Provost of Stanford where minority students protested *her*.

(34,454 posts)instead of keeping his eye on the ball. Then she saw "Spamalot" & bought $500 shoes while New Orleans drowned. Yeah, they were really safe. Insert incredibly disgusted eye roll here. How can she sleep at night or look at herself in the mirror? Has "her husband" painted HER portrait yet?

(4,259 posts)Makes me wonder what's going though Rice's head at the moment. Maybe a dozen times in my 60 years I've had occasion to stand up in front of (small) groups to speak...town hall meetings, school board stuff...and it has always been a time of some anxiety. It isn't easy for some. But Rice...looking at that woman with 'blood' on her hands...then walks to a podium and blathers. Either she has zero conscience or....never mind. Zero conscience works.
