Largest well site in Greeley city limits gets approval from Planning Commission

The largest well site in city limits was approved by the Greeley Planning Commission on Tuesday, allowing for up to a total of 58 wells on an existing pad near U.S. 85 and Colo. 34.

The 20-acre site, southwest of the intersection of 1st Avenue and Colo. 34, was also approved for an expansion that would make for a total of 42 oil tanks, eight water tanks and 52 separators.

Sara Barwinski, a member of Weld Air and Water, spoke on behalf of the group on Tuesday, saying they like the location of the well site near other industrial properties, and they understand and appreciate the clustering of wells to avoid spotting the city with even more well pads. “The challenge that remains to be faced in this era of rapid oil and gas development is that the incredibly high yields of such operations means that unprecedented volumes of flammable materials need to be stored on site in ever-increasing batteries of tanks,” Barwinski said.

She said the well site is still too close to an urban environment, including a highly traveled intersection near U.S. 85 and Colo. 34, a new charter school, Salida del Sol, and a subdivision.
