Georgia just passed a law allowing guns everywhere...including bars, schools and churches. Wow..what is it down there in the Bible belt that puts more "faith" in guns than in God?

Swede Atlanta
(3,596 posts)I live in Atlanta and see clearly what is coming.....
1. Republicans know in their hearts that change is coming in terms of demographics
The trajectory is toward an increasingly ethnically diverse and younger population. Both of these trends bode ill for them as Republicans attack undocumented workers, attempt to suppress the vote and are general obstructionists. Younger voters are increasingly more supportive of gay rights (including marriage equality), more concerned about poverty, income inequality, homelessness, student debt, etc. and increasingly irreligious. They know this is the Armageddon for them and they are doing everything they can to slam it to anyone they don't like.
2. Hate the Gay
That worked well in the 2004 election when a constitutional amendment was passed defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Interestingly conservatives don't have any problem with divorce, serial marriages, etc.
3. Love the Gun
As they see their country slipping away from them because there will be more non-Christian, non-White, non-gay hating, irreligious persons around they feel they have to pump themselves up by embracing their guns.
4. Eliminate taxes
They think we are a low-tax state and continue to drive us in the direction. The fact is we are a lower tax state but not a low tax state and the jobs that were promised by reducing taxes haven't happened. Trickle down? Not so much
5. Hate the ACA
They passed a law that prevents a state employee from even mentioning to a citizen they could get insurance by going on the federal exchange. The governor will not expand Medicaid which means Georgia taxpayers are paying for citizens of other states to have health insurance but denying it to our own citizens because the President is black

(48,121 posts)And it has prevented....oh wait, it didn't.
I am guessing the people who plan on using their gun to do something criminal (like shooting people) probably aren't going to just throw up their hands and go "Oh...crap, It is against the law to carry my gun into a bar!" and then stay at home and watch wheel of fortune.

(20,709 posts)As fascinating as your "guesses" are from a psychological perspective, the fact of the matter is, a lot of shootings aren't committed with lengthy premeditation. There are arguments or conflicts, they escalate, and someone ends up dead. The black-and-white world where everyone is either a hardened murderous criminal or a completely innocent law abiding citizen exists only in NRA propaganda.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)Over ninety nine percent of gun owners don't use them to harm others. Less than one percent do.
So from a psychological perspective, as you put it, why do we project onto the many others what the very few do? Back where I come from we call it 'bias' - whether it is the right wing trying to pain all muslims as terrorists or people who think all gun owners are just gonna go and shoot everyone up.
And 'nra talking' points is terribly lame. Really. It is nothing more than an attempt to lump someone into a group you hate with the hopes that anything they say is tainted by it based on other things the group says/does. And it is very transparent and never addresses the points brought in a discussion (probably because the person has nothing to offer to counter it except 'see - some group we don't like says the same thing, so...I dunno...).

(712 posts)Most gun owners will follow the law as you said but now ...no worries about drinking all night in a bar and
carrying a gun...
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)that most gun owners are as they are characterized around here.
I know a lot of people who own guns (and I used to interact with many more when I was in the reloading industry) and carrying to a bar isn't something they would think of doing anyway (although some might if they weren't drinking/picking someone up from a bar/etc).
There will always be those few of course - but let's also look at something else, a more rational way of looking at it.
A friend took me and my daughter out last night to Smokey Bones for dinner. Ribs, etc, to celebrate her 13th bday (belatedly).
They serve alcohol there. Many places one goes to eat probably do. Now, if someone had a gun would rather them leave it in the car (where it can be stolen and used in a crime) or keep it with them? I stopped many places on the way home when I was an armed guard (and since I owned the gun and we didn't have storing on premise I kept it with me obviously) if I stopped and got something to eat at a place that serves alcohol and took it in with me I could go to jail. If I leave it in the car and someone stole it people would blame me when it was used in a crime (and yes, people on DU will blame victims of crimes when it helps them with a cause).
DanTex
(20,709 posts)Who is "projecting onto the many others what the very few do"? Certainly nobody I know. Who thinks "all gun owners are just gonna go and shoot everyone up"? Nobody that I've ever met.
You know you are in weak position when all you can do is offer straw men. I'm in favor of cost-benefits analysis, which in this case means getting gun violence down in line with our international cohort. Your straw arguments are merely a distraction.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)Good luck with that.
And if you don't know anyone who thinks that way try reading around here more often.

(20,709 posts)I'm talking about human life over gun nuttery. The only money involved is the money that the gun industry makes at the expense of victims of gun violence.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)I dunno, sounds like trading things for freedoms to me.
The NRA apologists are out in force to defend Georgia's gun insanity. God, guns, and gays = the Tea Party's main "talking points."
