John McCain says running for President was his biggest mistake

Bad mistakes? He’s made a few.

But Sen. John McCain said his biggest by far was running for President in 2008.

The 77-year-old Arizona Republican, discussing his biggest regrets throughout his storied career as a Navy captain and politician, claimed that his failed presidential bid outflanked every other blunder. ....

McCain, however, said a close second was his decision during his failed 2000 presidential bid to not call for the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina Statehouse.

At the time, McCain, who had been preparing for the state’s Republican primary election against George W. Bush, said the issue should be decided by the state — a comment he came to regret quickly.

(from Wiki: ) The 1967 USS Forrestal fire was a devastating fire and series of chain-reaction explosions on 29 July 1967 that killed 134 sailors and injured 161 on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CVA-59), after an electrical anomaly discharged a Zuni rocket on the flight deck. Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War at the time, and the damage exceeded US$72 million (equivalent to $509 million today) not including damage to aircraft ....

A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain's or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi.

A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft. McCain admitted to causing that incident through "daredevil clowning" but returned safely. .....

McCain also expressed considerable uncertainty when investigators questioned him on Aug. 5 1967, just a week after the (Forrestal) fire: ....
