Ex-lab Beagle Making Good Progress.

About four months ago, I posted about the 3-year old beagle, Sam, who my wife and I fostered and then adopted though the Beagle Freedom Project. After four months, he is coming out of his shell and beginning to find his inner beagle.

Since spring has arrived, he's getting two long walks per day, and is progressing in his house training. He has met more people and dogs, and isn't shying away from everything so much. Tonight, for the first time, while lying next to me on the sofa, he sniffed my hand for a long time, then licked it.

He spent the past three years in a small cage in a lab somewhere, being used for some kind of testing. He's finally learning that nothing like that will ever happen to him again. I'm fencing the back yard in May, so he can run more freely.

I was a suspect once in a theft of a dozen or so beagles from a lab. (I wasn't actually involved.) They had been treated pretty badly for medical research. I heard through the grapevine that they all got good homes. I guess beagles are used a lot in research. I don't know why.

My wife and I are beagle lovers...and we demand pictures of this little guy enjoying his new wonderful life!

In all seriousness, thanks for taking in these wonderful guys. They deserve all the love and life they can after being in their former situation.

beagle come out of his shell.

Next Saturday, he and Dude will go with us to the Animal Humane Society's Walk for Animals. Every year, thousands of people and their dogs show up for the 2-mile walk. My wife and I will be wearing our Beagle Freedom Project T-shirts and caps, and will probably get to share our story with lots of people at the walk.

It'll be a bit of a trial for Sam, but he'll have a month of walks under his collar by then, and he's getting more and more used to people and other dogs. We think it will be good for him, but if he doesn't enjoy it, we'll cut our participation short.
