I lost my Aussie boy last week. It has taken me a week to post about it. Arrow was a black tri Australian Shepherd beautiful boy. He was never sick a day in his life. He was gone in a day. This is a terrible shock with a young dog that never presented any symptoms until the last days. He began with not being able to urinate. I took him into the Vet and they did xrays and found a large tumor on his spleen. Surgery was out of the question because of the size of the tumor and the vet said most likely they would let him expire on the operating table. They said he could go at anytime. I brought him home thinking there must be something terribly wrong with that diagnosis, it could not be possible.
The next day he collapsed, his hind legs losing all viability. He was bleeding out into his stomach as the tumor had ruptured. His gums were white. I rushed him in and we put him down. Such a young beautiful dog. I still cannot believe he is gone. His litter mate is suffering and looking for him and it's painful watching him go through it. Since conception they had never been separated one day in their lives.
I now learn that cancer is the #1 killer of dogs and cats. Never in all the years I have had dogs have I had any experience with cancer. We will forever mourn and miss his little cocky attitude and proud prancing around. My heart is broken.

(26,060 posts)I'm so very sorry for your loss. I lost one of my beloved cats to bone cancer 8 years ago and my sister lost her Golden Retriever to cancer last year. It's the hardest part of being a pet owner but they depend on us to know when it's time. I lasted less than a week before I got two more cats (they're brothers so your talking about littermates really touched my heart) - when you're ready to love again, you'll know.

Again, sorry.

(6,085 posts)I do know now from research that they call cancer of the spleen the Silent Killer as there are usually no symptoms until it's too late.I fed him the best there was, Blue Wilderness so don't know how much better you can get. No history of this within the litter or the breeder.
glinda
(14,807 posts)three dogs and one cat to it in the last five years. All due to poison accumulation in their pet foods during the Menu Foods Pet Food Poisonings. Even though I changed diets it was too late. I now have another dog who is starting down that path.
I was able to give my last one, a cattle dog, a good death and she lived to be 15 by making my own food for her. I now give half raw to the ones I have left. It is Sojos and all I do is add water.
C is killing our animals. Blue Wilderness is fair but there are better. Nature's Logic is very good. Sojos is great and is used for C dogs by some particularly the beef one.
I hope your other pup hangs in there. Wishing you strength and love and hugs.

(63,912 posts)It must have been terribly shocking and you must be grieving terribly!
I know it cannot be any solace to you at this awful moment but, in a less traumatic way, I went through the putting down of a beloved pet. However, she was old and given out her love and affection over many treasured years. I remember feeling how much I could not bear not having her loving presence in my life.
Sometimes grief over the loss of a pet seems insurmountable. I have seen a strong, grown man crumple in tears after putting down a little cat. These are some of our dearest friends in life and now they are gone.
Thank you for sharing your heartbreaking experience. Be well.

(1,214 posts)We noticed her going off on her own, which was unlike her, and sleeping. I called the vet and they did an x-ray and told us about the tumor. We were to do a biopsy the next day and before they did it she started to have seizures. They told us that the cancer had likely spread to her brain. We rushed over and held her as she crossed over rainbow bridge. She was the best dog ever, it's been over 2 years since she died. We adopted 2 more border collies from a rescue but I still think of her daily. My thoughts are with you and I know my baby will keep yours company until we are with them again.

(3,818 posts)about your beloved dog Arrow. I lost my beloved cat Queequeg last month (18.5 years) and will mourn him forever too. Perhaps starting his litter mate on pet antioxidant would prevent or stave off cancer if this breed is prone to that. (((HUGS)))

(8,175 posts)I lost my sweet chocolate lab to a ruptured tumor of the spleen. She too went quickly (one day and I had to put her down). At least she was older (about ten) when it happened. We had a good life together. It just about killed me to lose her, and it would have been so tough if she had died young from this. She was the best dog in the world and I still miss her.
Arrow will always have a special place in your heart, and I hope you find solace soon. If you are ready to do it, I'd love to see a photo of your sweet boy.
I've lost three dogs to cancer, and at least two cats. I can't help but wonder if it's the crappy food that is made for animals. I really don't trust processed dog and cat food.

(4,033 posts)We went through much the same thing a year and a half ago when we lost our beloved Cavalier King Charles, Sancho. He too was only 8 years old and never had any symptoms until one day he collapsed. He seemed a little disoriented, but by the next morning seemed fine. We found a vet who was open on Saturday and took him in. The vet checked him out and suggested that we do a full cardio workup with our regular vet. That night he passed away. We still miss him, even though we have other dogs. It is such a shock to lose a family member so unexpectedly.
The pain will never totally leave, but it will become bearable with time and you will be able to remember the good times with a smile. And I truly believe, to the very core of my being, that if there is some sort of existence or consciousness after this life, that our 4-legged family members will be there as well. There is no way in any kind of universe that I can comprehend that creatures who exhibit so much love and devotion and to whom we give so much love could not share in that existence as well.
Let the tears flow as they must. But know that there will always be a little piece of Arrow left in your heart forever.

We lost our tall border collide to cancer 7yrs ago. But she made it to an old age of 13. She was gorgeous - not typically smaller but a tall, broad-faced, 70lb girl with a heart of gold but stubborn as heck. We still miss her.

May be associated with tick disease, but in general they know little about why and how, it is different than other cancers.

We should all be lucky enough to get another 10 years out of all of them. They really are like our little children who never grow up. Hope you and the litter-mate can hang in there during such a tough time.

(1,616 posts)acted like she was sick, lively as a puppy then suddenly she collapsed, and it turned out her lungs were FULL of cancer tumors! I, like you, thought it couldn't be true. They were tiny tumors, I know how to deal with them, I could save her. Two days later she was gone. I wish animals weren't so good at hiding their sickness. I know how to take care of cancer holistically, and if I had known about it earlier I could have gotten her well. But she didn't show it until it was too late.
I try to remember that now that Lindy is out of her body she can go where she wants to, and be with all the people she wants to be with. I was her third home, and she loved her two previous humans, so I'm sure she spends a lot of time with them. I hope you can feel your Aussie boy with you too!

(19,926 posts)Especially that it was so sudden. What a shock. That must be so hard to take.
I had a wonderful pit bull that had cancer. They think it started in her sinuses and spread all over her head. By the time we found it it was too late for surgery as well. I was fortunate though, that I was able to bring her in to work with me every day and she hung in there for 9 months before I had to put her down. She started just walking in circles so I thought it had gotten into her brain and we put her down.
I did have a little West Highland White terrier/Maltese mix 20 years ago who got bone cancer. She had to get her leg amputated.
It is becoming more and more common. A lot of the pet food has bad ingredients. I just found out about carrageenan in cat food, I think it's in dog food as well and human food. I don't know that it's carcinogenic but it causes digestive issues.
Again, I feel for you. Teared up reading about your poor Arrow.
