Latino Walmart Employees to Demonstrate Outside Walmart-Sponsored Gala
Workers and Community Supporters to Call on Walmart Boardmember
Aida Alvarez to Speak Up and Lead Change at Walmart
San Francisco, CATonight, Wednesday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m., Latino Walmart employees and their supporters will demonstrate outside a Walmart-sponsored Gala calling on Walmart Board of Directors member Aida Alvarez to end her silence and lead a process to help Walmart change course. Walmart Associates have tried for more than two years to meet with Ms. Alvarez, who has repeatedly ignored their requests. In the latest attempt to avoid Walmart workers, eight workers who had previously purchased tickets to attend the fundraiser, had their tickets refunded at the last minute. The demonstration is a response to Walmarts continued unlawful actions against workers and the National Labor Relations Boards (NLRB) complaint filed against the retail giant for violating workers rights.
Aida Alvarez, a leader in the Latino community, has repeatedly refused to sit down with Walmart employees to hear their concerns, let alone address them, despite having been asked personally. Latino workers are calling on Walmart, the nations and possibly the states largest employer of Latinos, to end its retaliation against all workers standing up and speaking out for better jobs and higher wages. In California, Latinos now make up the majority of the states population.
