http://wamu.org/news/14/05/01/private_donations_needed_to_spruce_up_national_mall_says_interior_secretaryInterior Secretary Sally Jewell says the National Mall needs a face lift and that it won't likely happen without private donations to help the National Park Service.
On Thursday, Jewell joined a fundraising luncheon for the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall. The group is working to restore and preserve the National Mall that runs from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial.
Jewell says the area known as Constitution Gardens particularly needs an overhaul, including a new pond where the fish won't die every year.
For years, the mall's grounds and facilities fell into disrepair, even though it's is the most-visited national park. Visitors often find dead grass, broken sidewalks and fetid pools of water.

How sad. We can't even maintain our back yard. The Republicans won't vote for it because it might create a few jobs.

It will be barred and we will be locked out, but the money to fix it will be there. Might even throw a buck or two into actually fixing it.

(8,159 posts)All the CASH that disappeared in Iraq not to mention the cost of that ridiculous war. How about the suffering our soldiers are still enduring from wars for oligarchs.
Now we are close to a Cold War with Russia!
The billionaires have found ways to pay little in taxes. Many people in this country can't afford to feed their children or themselves. Jobs moved out of the country, talk of cutting SS and Medicare, etc. etc.
Now they want us to pay for the commons?
We are quickly becoming a third country.

Better yet sell them off to corporations who can then charge a toll to pass through their section.

(13,992 posts)I sort of LIKE the idea of the National Mall being maintained through private donations -- and I'm not talking corporate bucks with signs all over the place. I mean a campaign where the maximum donation is $50. I think it could be a good way to shame the "Do Nothing" Congress: Average people can stuff done in Washington, why can't you?

Maybe the White House needs some sprucing up...and we could take up Donald Trump's offer to do renovation and add that Ballroom he wanted President Obama to consider putting in as an addition.
Obama refused him...but, times are tight and there's that Ukraine Crisis so we just have to figure it's Austerity for us and the People's Monuments and more money for Defense and Security.
The simple answer is to Charge Admission to the Peoples Places which were built with our tax dollars. Heck they are going to make all our Interstates Toll Roads and those were built with our taxdollars.
Go For It! This is Change we ALL can Believe in. Hands across the Aisle working together. Repugs and Dems agreeing on how to carve it all up.
