The little Calico is much improved...Vet says she's trying to get out of the cage, won't eat, but he said 1000% better! They're keeping her on fluids because she has cocsidyosis (god only knows on to spell that) and a GI infection, so the IV has fluids and antibiotics...I should be able to pick her up this afternoon. Thanks!

(2,125 posts)I hope she improves day by day and you can take her home. My cat Sammy had Cocsidya (spelling?) and she survived it. I got her from a pet store in Guam, brought her home and two days later, she was throwing up. I raced her to the Vet and found out she had Cocsidya, an intestinal parasite. She was treated with Clavamox and fully recovered. It can be transmitted through the mother to new born kittens. Good luck with the little one.

(20,577 posts)My little 6 year old neighbor and I were out in the yard and decided to blow on some wishers (dandelions gone to seed).
She told me she wished something for her father's puppy and I told her I wished for your cat to get better. Then for good measure we traded wishes and did it again. I'll tell her the kitty is much improved !
Glad to hear the good news.

(22,271 posts)I just knew she would be fine. Kittens are like that. Illness(es) can hit them and within an hour or two they can be down for the count but definitely not out if you can get them to the vet. Yay for good news!

(9,966 posts)very common in little rescue babes, but defeat able if caught in time. Good luck to you and her. Calicoes are tough little girls!

(9,823 posts)I fostered a mama calico and her 3 babies (rescued from a high-kill shelter) and they all had this. It is common in cats that live outdoors or have been in a shelter where litter box contamination is usually the problem. I had to dose my little family twice a day with Albon. It is also a good idea to give your kitty a pro-biotic--2 hours after giving the antibiotic. My vet gave me Propectalin to help give some relief from diarrhea. This combination treatment cured everything.

(12,157 posts)Coccidiosis is caused by a paramecium and a lot of adult animals tolerate it quite well but the young and stressed can get an over load. My experience is with dairy goat and we treat with a sulfa drug.
BTW I cheated on spelling Coccidiosis I knew your spelling was off but had to look it up to get it right.

(14,881 posts)per wiki it's common in puppies due to immature immune system.
YEAH!!!!!! Glad to read the kitty is diagnosed and improving!
tblue37
(65,340 posts)why pregnant women should not clean cat boxes--because the protozoa that cause it are spread through feces, and the disease is teratragenic (causes birth defects in fetuses) and is also dangerous to persons with compromised immune systems (remember "Train Spotting"?).
You should get your other rescue girl tested, too, and if they share a litter box, your other cats might have been exposed.
Ms. Toad
(34,066 posts)coccidia is not generally a threat.
If the other cats are similarly immature (or have compromised immune systems) they should all be treated. We delayed getting a wd kitten to avoid exposure, then when our calico later had a reinfestation they both had to be treated.

(65,340 posts)fosters cats, so if her mature cats get the disease and are not treated for it, they could pass it to any kitten she fosters--including back to this one or to her little sister.
Ms. Toad
(34,066 posts)probably twice - this little one will be reinfested again, and again, and again - until she ages out of susceptibility. And that it doesn't make much difference how the mature cats are treated.

My calico rescue kitten is now nearly 2 years old, and is the delight of my life. Calico cats are known as the redheads of the cat world - lots of personality. Mine is just a sweetheart with a very stubborn streak!
Ms. Toad
(34,066 posts)Don't count on it being gone - and get her to the vet at the first sign it has returned.
There is a new (very expensive) treatment that is better than the others.
Most don't directly kill the kill the critter - they just make it hostile for it to live, with the hope that the normal gut flora will keep it under control. The new treatment does. After 3 rounds of increasingly obnoxious standard treatment, we convinced our vet to get the new stuff.

(805 posts)Glad that she will most likely be ok!
Your quick response and taking her to the vet surely helped! Well done!
Ms. Toad
(34,066 posts)If they are just giving her antibiotics, it is not killing the coccidia (that's now how they work - and the often don't work well, especially with very bad infestations). We went through at least three different antibiotics, some at higher doses than our calico's weight suggested would be safe, and it kept coming back.
I finally did some research and found ponazuril - and then had to push the vet pretty hard to try it. Ultimately, it is what did the trick.
