Source: San Francisco Chronicle
Just minutes after President Obama wrapped up his speech on solar energy Friday at a Walmart in Mountain View, Democratic National Committee member Chris Stampolis looked around at the racks of American flag-themed bikinis and $5.44 T-shirts made in China and just sighed.
We certainly obviously support the president were thrilled that hes in the White House, he said. But were quite concerned that the message that you send when you come to Walmart especially in the Bay Area is not a really consistent message with the working people and Democrats within this community.
... Unfortunately, choosing this location has created a bit of distrust between the leaders of organized labor here in the Bay Area and the Democratic Party, Stampolis said. So those of us who serve as national members on the DNC level want to ensure were also standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in labor.
... Democratic concerns about labors anger may have explained the absence of House members and legislative leaders at the kind of public presidential event where they usually jockey to be recognized. Some party activists, including Stampolis, said that had the White House consulted with local Democrats, they would have warned what the reaction would be.

(62,325 posts)I disagree. I am glad to see they still DO care. A lot Dems including Labor Unions, huge donors to the Dem Party, are losing faith in Democrats to represent their interests. Seeing the President they voted for at Walmart's, one of the worst abusers of Labor Rights, and anti-Union, users of foreign slave and child labor, could be the last straw for the major Unions, which DEMS NEED in order to win elections.
What a strange thing to say!

(712 posts)Mr. Obama has been pushing for the free trade pact that would cover 11 other nations, including Canada, Mexico, Australia and Japan. But 151 House Democrats have written a letter in opposition to granting Mr. Obama fast-track trade authority to complete the deal, fearful that it would lead to the loss of union jobs in the U.S. and weaken environmental standard

(18,998 posts)Sending a message to labor that the dems are just Republican lite...and not all that lite ether.
But this will help to promote Walmart and the Walton family will be pleased.

(10,091 posts)It's not out of character for him to commend Wal-Mart for their strides in energy efficiency, despite their dependence on government assistance and unregulated foreign labor for their profit margin.
I think there are better uses of his time, but maybe this gets his foot in the door to help workers.

(6,785 posts)In lots of rural areas, there's literally nowhere to shop but Wal-Mart unless you want to drive for an hour. Now that The Socialist has spoken at a Wal-Mart, a lot of baggers would probably rather stick a fork in their eye than go into one. With nowhere else to buy food, they may not make it to the election.
