I know that for many of you this is a hard day.
Our society doesn't recognize you as mothers to the children you gave life to.
Our society doesn't recognize the legitimacy of any pain or grief you may be suffering.
Many of you were coerced into an adoption you did not want.
Many others were in a dire situation and forced to accept a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Many were slut-shamed by their church, and bullied into submission. Some of you had parents who pressured you into it. And some lost their children during the Baby Scoop Era, when there really was no other choice.
But very few of you simply forgot your children and moved on with your lives. I know how much pain can be involved in being a first mother--and it's a pain that many are forced to bear alone, and in silence.
So today I would like to honor all the first mothers/birth mothers/natural mothers on this board. You are my heroes. And you most definitely ARE mothers to all of your children, including those who were lost.

(9,265 posts)Katie was found on a doorstep wrapped in a blanket with a note pinned on it: please take care of my baby. Maybe she was a second daughter and they knew they couldn't keep her. Maybe the mother was under pressure from her husband's parents to produce a son. I'm sure the mother thinks about her daughter all the time and I wish there was a way to let her know that Katie is a beautiful, smart, thriving teenager now.
