I have had trouble the last few days getting DU to load, especially pages starting with www. Upload.du works, haven't tried the others beyond www.DU though. I was wondering if you were having issues, if it was a particular part of the country as it may be something like that. So, this poll.

(11,733 posts)About one-third of the time when I go to a DU page, it won't load all the way unless I wait for 20-30 seconds. If I reload or click the link again, it usually loads almost immediately. Happens on multiple browsers, multiple devices, multiple locations. I don't think it happens on mobile networks, though.

(50,414 posts)I've done this and suggested it to others on DU. Works for some, for others, not. Worth a try.
Go to "options" under "block attack sites" go to "exceptions" and copy the DU url to it. Fixed.

(86,579 posts)and it worked the first two times I tried to open a link, after that, back to eternal spin.
There has been a lot of conversation about Centurylink, the ISP for many DSL users in western states... they are having serious tech problems. I realized that watching videos is also affected, on youtube and watching shows like RMS. Segments are cut off in the middle where I have to reload them. Also, in my area, many who use land-line phones have no long distance... since last Friday. those who have satellite dish ISPs are not having this problem.

(115,677 posts)It seems odd, wondering if du has servers that typically serve a certain part of the country? I am fairly clueless about all of this, it is odd.
steve2470
(37,457 posts)the routing works from your computer to upload and it does not to www.du.
Here's a highly simplified "diagram" of what you're dealing with:
Your computer.....
connects to....
Your Internet Service Provider.....
which routes your request for upload or www.du to a DNS server (the internet phone book).
Your request then gets sent over at least one and probably two or three networks to DU's network, which is dca.net. DU's servers are located within their facilities. To summarize, there can be problems all along that route. IMHO, people need to call their ISP's and ask why they are having trouble getting DU.
Here's the traceroute I just did (a sort of map from me to DU):

As you can see, my request went over several networks. Luckily, I had no problems.
Hope this helped a tad. Recursion, Aerows and others can explain this much more thoroughly than I can.

(37,457 posts)Other factors are, Elad said a server was on the fritz and was being repaired/replaced by their ISP, and Aerows said a DNS server on the west coast was acting up.

(86,579 posts)Folks in my area don't have long distance... those on Centurylink land lines. It's also messing up video.
I did see a note from Elad who suggested using "sync" in place of the "www" in the URL window. That works. If I get hung up, I stop the loading, change the "www" to "sync" and it comes right up every time... on DU. I have yet to try it on other sites where the video isn't running well. But I have to go to bed soon so I'll check on that idea tomorrow.

(8,175 posts)the only way I can get in is a link to a thread in google.
So...I have century link, and was told by their recorder they know they have an issue and are working on it. It's been down for me for well over a week. I'm in Oregon.
2naSalit
(86,579 posts)Of course they'll admit they have a problem when it's a recorded message so they don't have to hear your complaint or answer any questions. Wish I had other ISP options.
The "sync" thing still works for me but watching video is still a drag.
Hope they get their ducks in a row soon, this is getting older than those constant mailers I get telling me to "bundle" and/or upgrade for more than I can afford. They've raised the rates twice in the past year already. Might have to juts go off-line for a while... that won't kill me either. I went for three years without a phone, and went six years without web access.
Cheers.

(10,778 posts)... at least from my laptop and desktop, but oddly it was working for my phone and tablet connected to the same WiFi. Changing to Google's public DNS didn't help, nor did adding an "attack site" exception. However, betterment.democraticunderground.com is sort of working except that it sometimes hangs loading avatars and graphics.

I will send CenturyLink a message later today -- from the messages about this over the past few days, that does seem to be the common link.
Very frustrating.

(451 posts)getting it to load. My ISP is Comcast. I've also had some problems getting it to load with Verizon 4g. Something else I find interesting is that my Comcast economy tier basic cable does not include MSNBC, but it includes Fox News and CNN. I figured that since NBC owned Comcast that they would at least include MSNBC.

(2,949 posts)Been a problem since Friday. My chat session with them went to hell after they tried to sell me a higher speed. If I can access Ancestry all day without fail and not DU, I don't need higher speed. I need them to fix the problem that seems to be plaguing more than just me.
I took the advise of Elad and am now accessing through http:// sync.democraticunderground.com, but that does not solve the problem that seems to be on the Century Link end. And they could care less.
