Benghazi Prompts CNBC Anchor To Go On Epic Rant Against GOP

CATHERINE THOMPSON – MAY 13, 2014, 9:00 AM EDT

A "Morning Joe" panelist went on a tear Tuesday against the Republican Party during a discussion of the politicization of the Benghazi attacks.

When panelist Donny Deutsch suggested that pocketbook issues weigh more heavily on voter's minds at the polls than Benghazi does, CNBC anchor Brian Sullivan disagreed. He said his conservative father frequently asks him why the media doesn't care more about the 2012 attacks in Libya.

"Can we stop saying 'the' Republican Party?" Sullivan said, making air quotes with his hands. "As somebody who grew up in a conservative household, I don't recognize the Republican Party of even my youth. I don't like what I see. I don't like the far right, I don't like the extremism."

He added that as a fiscal conservative who isn't religious, supports same-sex marriage and mostly supports marijuana legalization, he feels the GOP has pushed him away.

He joked at the end that this would probably be the last time he'd be invited back on Morning Joe though.

So he's a Reagan Republican, or his euphemism "fiscal conservative." Do we really need to applaud him? This guy might not like the fundies on social issues, but he still believes in trickle down & tax cuts. He probably thinks Reagan was a god. And he's arguing that Benghazi is important. He's still a stupid asshole, so a kneejerk reaction of applause might be misplaced.

What this guy says he stands for and where the line for the religious racist bigoted fundy wing of the party starts is where the schism will happen.

Scum like Hannity have taken to calling themselves "conservatives" as a way of distancing themselves from the party. But like many Democrats, they may be hesitant to leave the large party for the siren song of the libertarians. They have done a great job attracting young, white males because of pot, but the older guys still are attracted to power. And really, Ron Paul looks like a strange scarecrow on his last legs. Now, if they had another candidate, a real macho guy, then watch disillusioned republicans flock to them. I do believe betting on the churches, which are getting more and more restrictive--virginity? have a billion kids? burning in hell for any infraction?--are going to lose in the end. But I do believe the Rs know this and will just hire better PR people. Just you wait, by 2016, they'll have ol' Jeb looking quite a lot like John Wayne.
