Darrell Issa’s Benghazi Stunt Blows Up In His Face as Kerry Won’t Appear at Hearing
By: Jason Easley

Darrell Issa’s subpoena of Sec. of State John Kerry has completely backfired, as the State Department announced that Kerry would not be testifying at next week’s Benghazi hearing, and Issa put the subpoena on hold.

According to The Hill:

A subpoena for John Kerry to testify before Congress next week on Benghazi has been put on hold while the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the State Department negotiate when — or if — the secretary of state will appear.

Jen Psaki, a State Department spokeswoman, said Monday night that Kerry will be in Mexico May 21 on a previously scheduled trip, and that the department is working with the committee to “explore whether there are better means of addressing the Committee’s interests, including through a more appropriate witness.”

….

Frederick Hill, a spokesman for the House committee, told the Associated Press Monday that “The State Department has told the Committee that they are committed to finding an alternative date in the near future for Secretary Kerry to testify before the Oversight Committee. As such, Chairman Issa agreed to lift the subpoena obligation for May 21.”

The whole point of this hearing was to get mainstream media attention by dragging Kerry in to testify. Issa is still trying to turn his Benghazi Pinocchio into a real news story. He can’t do that if he is unable to create a pretense of a coverup by the Obama administration. If Democrats don’t play along, this story goes nowhere.

It doesn’t matter to him that having John Kerry testify is silly and pointless, because Kerry wasn’t Secretary of State when the assault occurred. For Issa, this is all about the publicity that’s never going to come.

Benghazi is a non-scandal, and now Rep. Issa is going to holding a hearing next week that will get no media attention. The only thing that Darrell Issa accomplished with his Kerry subpoena is that he exposed his shoddy tactics and complete lack of credibility for the world to see.

The subpoena was ordered before even asking Kerry to testify -- and then without asking the State Department about his schedule. The State Department IMMEDIATELY responded that Kerry had a commitment to be in Mexico. This apparently did not phase Issa. In addition, Kerry was then in Africa - working on little things like Sudan and the Great Lakes region and Ethiopia. The State Department told the media that they did not know - at that point (when it was the middle of the night in Africa) - if the Secretary knew of the subpoena.

The reaction on the right was completely idiotic at that point - threatening that Issa should order Kerry arrested. (The idea that it would be an enormous insult to Mexico to cancel for a political dog and pony show was completely missed.)

When Kerry returned, his response was very polite that he and state would respond and do what the law requires. State did get Issa to rescind the subpoena for the date Kerry is in Mexico.

At this point, State is also questioning if Kerry is the right person to testify. What Issa wants answers to is why they did not get the letter the FOI got. Obviously, Kerry did not personally do the data pull for any of the requests. The fact that it was released for the FOI suggests there was no attempt to hide it. I assume that all that can be asked that relates to Kerry was any directives that he gave to the State Department employees with regards to complying or if he (in his spare time I guess) got personally involved.

Today, mad that State suggested Kerry might not be the most appropriate person to testify on this -- while NOT saying he wouldn't - Issa reissued the subpoena. http://www.sfgate.com/news/politics/article/GOP-chairman-revives-Benghazi-subpoena-of-Kerry-5481057.php Again he did not check the date with the State Department. He also put out word of the subpoena by twitter -- just like the first time. Nothing says serious, non partisan hearing like putting it out to his followers on twitter first!

Issa himself couldn't slept well for past few weeks. He is well aware that it's his own credibility that are on the thin ice right now.
