Macklemore Denies Tour Costume Was Jewish Stereotype

Macklemore has gotten in some hot water for a costume he wore during a performance on Friday night (May 16) that many have pointed out evokes Jewish stereotypes.

At the opening night of the "Spectacle: The Music Video" exhibition at the EMP Museum in Seattle, Macklemore performed to the hometown crowd while wearing a wig, fake beard and prosthetic nose. The "Thrift Shop" rapper reportedly made no reference to the getup during the performance.

TBH, I don't think Macklemore is an anti-Semite. Not at all(as far as we can tell). But this does have some unfortunate historical connotations for it, so the right thing to do, in my opinion, is to come out and apologize. And hopefully learn from that.

offended by make up that was never intended to insult anyone in the first place.

The first time I heard, "I'm sorry if YOU got offended," it was from one of the most disingenous people I know (a relative, so can't be dumped without WWIII.)

Then, I started to hear it from politicians. It must have appeared somewhere under "How to seem like you are apologizing without actually admitting that you've done anything wrong."

Rapper Macklemore posted an apology on his website late Monday, saying he didn't mean to mock Jewish people by wearing a costume that some say was anti-Semitic during a performance in Seattle last week.

Macklemore wrote that he randomly chose the pieces of the costume he wore at Friday's performance so that he could disguise himself and move freely around during the secret show. He said it wasn't meant to be a caricature of a Jewish man.

"I respect all cultures and all people," he wrote. "I would never intentionally put down anybody for the fabric that makes them who they are. I love human beings, love originality, and ... happen to love a weird outfit from time to time."

Grammy Award winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis made the appearance at the EMP Museum in their hometown to help celebrate the debut of a new exhibition.
