The GOP's Woman Problem

Here are some lovely bar graphs taken from a 2012 article that explain why the House GOP is desperate the get some mileage out of that October surprise that went dud.

Now read the article. Note that GOP women like Hillary.

Overall, 57 percent of the poll's respondents said they would support a Clinton candidacy. That includes 35 percent of Republican women. To put that in perspective, President Barack Obama won just 6 percent of the overall Republican vote this year. Among all women, 66 percent would support Clinton's potential bid in 2016.

And America thinks she did a very good job as Secretary of State. So did the GOP--at the time. They had no problem confirming her. They had no complaints during her tenure---until after the fact, when it became apparent that their own party's women liked her so much that they would be willing to cross party lines and vote for her. And who can blame them, when their own party seems determined to alienate them? Republican women do not want to see their choice eliminated. They do not want to see their wages reduced to half of what men make. They do not want to be victims of discrimination in the work place---and they do not like sexual harassment either. Women use more health care than men in this country, so women are particularly vulnerable to GOP policies like the refusal to accept the Medicaid expansion that are driving rural hospitals out of business in 24 states. How would you like to be pregnant and know that if you go into premature labor, the closest hospital is two hours away? How would you like to be forced to travel to another state in order to get an abortion? Well, Republican women don't like it either. And they don't like hearing a former Senator and Secretary of State called a witch, a bitch and worse.

The GOP has written off women---and now, they realize that their own women are ready to ditch them in the next election. THAT is why they are so desperate to start talking about ex-girlfriends and consulates and brain injuries. That is why they are trying to jettison the Tea Party--even though their billionaire donors still secretly agree with all of the kooky things that they paid the Tea Party to espouse.

They are scared of one woman, and so they have declared war on one woman.

Add Julian Castro as her VP, to let the nation's largest growing demographic know that the Democratic Party has them squarely under the umbrella, and there is no way that the Democratic Party will lose in 2016. And this has the GOP very, very frightened. So frightened that they can not even focus on this fall's election. All they can do is concentrate on 2016 and what it will mean for them if they get eight more years of Democrats in the White House.

Run, Republicans, Run. Run for your political lives. At this point, I am not sure that all the Citizens United money in the world can save you.

At the Presidential level, there is little hope for any Republican candidate.

I am thrilled to see Hillary Clinton polling so well, but I remain of the opinion that Elizabeth Warren would win by a larger margin and govern better than Ms. Clinton.
